I know someone started a thread regarding lowering a mid-40's ford.........Can anyone link me to it? I can't seem to find it using the search function..............I must be a dumbass................Any help would be appreciated............. Thanks in advance. Tim
Hey Tim, Can't find the thread, but you can get them real low, if you run bags. I with the help friends and beer got my chassis sitting about an inch of the ground, it was built to be able to drive dumped. I havn't got the new chassis under the car yet but it shouldn't be too long. Just make sure you do your homework first and take into account all things hanging below the framerails. Just common sense stuff. I'll try to scan and post some pics for you. Good luck.
Slingshot........I sent you a PM....... Back up for the day crowd............ I know someone posted on this topic............ Please help a search function dumb ass out!!!!!!!! Thanks.
The rear has the stock leaf springs.......... I'd like to make the car pretty low.......I've used lowering blocks but I can't get the taildragger stance that I want with them........... I thought I had read a thread about lowering '46-'48 fords that covered both "traditional" lowering techniques as well as using bags etc......... Honestly, I will probably run air bags but I'd rather not have to notch the frame if I don't have to.................... Tell me what you think.............
I used the Chassis Engineering kits front and back on mine. The front kit comes with a dropped tube axle and a new spring (and other stuff). The rear changes it from transverse to parallel leaf. I too out a couple leaves and added 4" blocks in the rear. It rides ok. I didn't want to go too low. I wanted a more traditional look.
THANKS KIRK! That car is PERFECT. Enough of the nut tapping..........Can you link me to a site where I can get the rear kit? Did you have to modify the frame? Man, if mine would sit like that it'd be perfect.............. Thanks, Tim
The stock rear is pretty easy to lower on these cars. Extended shackles is the quick and dirty way, the stock rear panhard bar helps minimize sway. The traditional way to get rear low is to replace the rear crossmember with a straight one. You'd probably have to build it from scratch or rework an original.
Stud - forgive my ignorance.........and since I don't have the car here at the house, I can't even go out and look at it so as to avoid looking like a dumb-ass.......so, fuck it.............dumb-ass I am.......... How does the cross-member affect the stance of the car? Right now it has the stock leaf springs with the axle on top and 3" blocks.........and it's not low at all, really..........I was thinking of removing a helper or 2, maybe getting extended shackles, puting taller blocks in, etc.......... But you and KIRK have me thinking..........keep it coming, maybe I can get it done yet.........................
my 46 has an 8 inch from a granada with parallel leafs and 3 inch blocks. the front is a nova clip with chopped coils and the weight of a hemi lowering it some. on top of all that, the car is channelled 4 inches.
Their site is pretty lame and minimal. Maybe order a catalog. No real frame modifying required. The only modification I made to the kit was to ditch the shock mounts that they supply and made custom ones so that I could run air-shocks to adjust the ride quality. It changes the height of the car about an inch from aired up to empty. They have kits for Ford, Edsel or Chevy rear ends. The perfect one is a '58 Edsel...that's what I used.
Stock rear crossmember is sort of V shaped in the middle where the spring bolts up. Replacing/reworking with a flat crossmember will give a real serious drop. That's all that was done to my dad's '47 back in the day.
So you're talking about with the transverse spring? Mine, as KIRK helped me learn, has already been converted to having a paralell set up............... That thing sits exactly like I want mine to sit...............
slammed........that looks great! The only problem is that I don't want to have to pull the body from the car.........It's done but just too HIGH............... I'm gonna give everyone's suggestions a shot this weekend......... Thanks again...............
