Thanks patmanta. Do you mean like this? 1393891221120.jpg
I don't know this car but I love the look of it. But no, she wants is to be dark metallic grey with a purple metal flake roof. With purple in the interior somehow.

Haven't got work on the car much. I did finish the driver side floor pan, and started on the passenger. 1394923466776.jpg

I have been trying to get my boy Maxx's pedal car stroller done for the summer. Between it and work the desoto is sitting. 1394923615968.jpg
I did get momma to come out and get a photo with the car. 1394923716487.jpg

Thanks shadams. I appreciate that a lot. I want Maxx to be able to say he was dropped off on his first day of school in a '55 desoto.

Good luck with the build. I can just see all the soccer moms freaking in their suv's when that cool car pulls up.

Thanks ranchero59. Yeah its going to be cool. She works 3 miles from home and the schools are less than that. So this car will be driven daily by her. She has already said she doesn't ever want a bulky SUV.

OK. Catch the car on fire today. Don't worry its OK. I finished the front pans and started poking around the back floor pans to double check them. 1395786441468.jpg 1395786471053.jpg Started with a small hole turning into two large ones. 1395786504044.jpg

As I was welding on the driver side rear pan I happened to catch some of the old undercoating on fire, I think. Most of the time you get some little flame you just pat with you glove and its out. This was under the car and was a little harder to get. I do keep a jug of water and a fire extinguisher in the shop. Luckily I didnt need the extinguisher.

Here is the patch I made for the drivers rear. I'm still new to a bead roller but I figure practice were no one will see it. 1395786965678.jpg
Now I need to make up the passenger side them just finish some underside welds. Hopefully I can keep the car from burning.

smart move on the extinguisher I thought I was one of the only paranoid guys who made sure they had one handy when I'm in the garage. More guys need to take heed from this example.

    ...only one?? ;)

I would certainly recommend having several and place them in different areas. Now, of course, if your shop is small then 1 or 2 may be all you need, but, if your shop is attached to your house then you can't have too any.

I would agree. I only have one but my "shop" is only a 2 car garage. Also whenever I am doing anything like welding or burning the fire extinguisher is close by.
Luckily it wasn't really a big deal. The fire was small just in an hard place to reach.

I always try and get underneath the car and use a wire attachment on my angle grinder and remove any undercoat in the area I'm welding to avoid starting fires before hand.

The passenger side rear pan is done. The rear under side is done and I just need to finish the underside of the front pans. 1396136492872.jpg
Next I'll push it out side and wire wheel the hell out of it. All of that old undercoating is gone. I'll respray both sides of the floor.

Keep getting rain around here so I decided to start stripping the front of the car. The grill pan had some pitting so I wanted to address that, this also gave me a chance to clean the core support. 1397067059679.jpg
    1397067078876.jpg
There was almost an inch of undercoating on the bottom of the grill pan. I got to finish scraping that off, and paint that.

By the way I had to post this as well. Saturday I got a chance to see the 1966 batmobile. I had to get a picture with Maxx in it.

Looks like you got lucky when the guy sold you that car, most times they sell the grill also. Good luck with your build. Nice looking family also.

Thanks xhotrodder. I figured the grill was worth what i paid for the car. The grill is in great shape too.

I'll keep it in mind Istwsh. Your about 5-6 hours away. I think I'll put the 727 in for now and maybe work out the overdrive stuff before I put one in. Are they 2 wheel drive tranns?

Cool, thanks Istwsh. I would really like run a overdrive, because this car is going to be driven a lot. Also the rear end I have for it already has 3.55 gears in it and I don't want to swap for a highway gear. But I'm going to take the easy way out for now.
I wish I knew someone who has done this before, and could give me some direction. I've read how to retrofit the overdrive in but I haven't talked to anyone who could say "Yep, that works like this".
Oh well something to do later.

    Hey everybody. Welcome back.
Warm weather has gotten here hopefully, so work has slowed on the car. We've been driving my dodge around to the shows and haven't gotten much done.
I did pull the gauges and cut out the old wiring harness. The new one is started being ran, but I need to test all the gauges and see what works and what don't. 1400104663465.jpg

Saturday momma and I went to St.Louis nitro rendezvous at Gateway Motorsports. It was a pre-65 car show, drags and pin up contest. She got third place in the contest, and all the girls climbed all over the dodge. 1400104993136.jpg

Thanks MoParFinman. I see you have a dodge of your own. Hard to see from your avatar but it looks like a 56? Cool, once the desoto is closer to being done I'm going to do some more work on the Dodge.

Worked on the desoto a little. It took forever to get the undercoating off the underside. I got the frame and underside all painted except back by the gas tank. I'll take care of it when I pull the rear end and tank. 1402004460078.jpg
I got the heater box installed, and still got a lot of wiring. I think the next day I get to work on it the engine is going back in. Fingers crossed. 1402004588064.jpg

Big accomplishment today. The engine and trans are in, after I had to track down a flex plate. My original plan was to use a aftermarket plate that I could use a 318 torque converter with. It didn't have the right hole in it for the earlier converter. I got it out of a 85 diplomat. The converter I was going to use was I think a 71 truck. So I traded it to a buddy for a flex plate off a 383 and a early 360 converter. Everything works now. Next is to keep wiring, lots of wiring still. 1402615506377.jpg 1402615524430.jpg
I think I'm going to have trouble with a fan shroud. I got a lot of room in front of the engine. If anybody has an idea let me know. 1402615644778.jpg

Not much done lately. I've been off because of a gall bladder surgery. I haven't been able to do much. So while I've been down, we've been planning a car show, my club is putting on. KREEPSHOW. Check out the thread I started for it.

  29. Cool build. I am currently working on a '55 Desoto. Finishing up the re-wire. Hope to have it going before summer is over.
