Who has the best selection of gears for the 8 inch? I have 3.00 factory gears right now with a t5 and 28-1/2 inch tires, i did the calculations on the project 33 site and it says at 75 in 5th gear the motor will only be spinning 1650 rpm. What is the optimum rpm for a mild small block?

I think 3:50 would be about right with the overdrive. Not sure about the rpm

Speedy has them for $200 plus $75 for the OH kit.
Read somewhere 21k for a V8 at hiway speeds.

There was a recent thread about some aftermarket gears howling regardless of setup, might want to check that out.

I'm running a 3:50 gear in my 8 inch behind my T-5 and it runs about 2K RPM at 70 MPH.

Go at least 3.50 gears,my buddy has a 302 in a 65 Falcon with 3.50s,says overdrive is useless until 70+ mph,and he drives like an OLD man!! I have had good luck with Richmond gears, just did a set of 3.50s last year,I get them through Summit!! ROY.

Thanks guys. I was looking at 3.80 and that should put me around 2200 rpm at 75.

The Summit gears are a "white box" of another brand.

I haven't done any rear ends lately but I always used USA made gears.
I have ridden in several cars with Chinese gears and they were noisy.

Randy's... the ONLY place I buy them and I have installed a lot of gears. Even their lower priced gear sets that they say "may" be a little noisy are quieter than the rest.

But that is what a good stereo is for.... drown out the road noise :)

A few years ago I installed a set in a 8 in ford,I believe they were made in India. I set the depth to the suggested height, assembled it to there suggested back lash and used mopar gear marking compound to verify the contact.
It was in left field,I double checked my measurements and same results.
I ended up putting .030 more in the pinion to get a decent pattern.
I figured if it was noisy easy enough to pull it and set it to their pinion depth.
It was quiet as a church mouse, the car was a quiet one so you would have picked up on it.
So take the depth with a grain of salt on import gears,USA stuff falls right in when installed to the suggested depth.
Again you get what you pay for, sometimes it may be the only game in town though.

I just put the Summit branded ones in when changing from 3.40 to 3.80
and I couldn't be happier, no issues. And the price was right.

All I know is that the stock 5 speed 5.0 Mustang had a 226R tire and 2.73 gears, with 3.08 as the option. Depends on your cam, but I put 3.73s in two of them and that was too much for the Highway. Great around town, though. Depends on whether you want to use the 5th like an overdrive or not

    Your results may vary

Was that the $160 set? Did some research and just about every brand some one has complained about gear noise.

Try that auction site we all know and love; it's usually the private party types you have to worry about, not actual vendors. As far a Randy's Ring and Pinion goes, I live less than 2 miles from them, have dealt with them a couple of times, and have't been too impressed either time. Not really trashing them, but I have been there, done that, and probably will not use them again. They may take a different approach with telephone/catalog type orders, but their counter sales people need some work. I always see/hear the raves about them, but I don't see it. JMPO. I put a set of Richmond 3:55s in the Granada 8-inch in my 48. With the 700R4 locked up and in OD ( 0.68:1 ) the SBC is running about 2100 at 70mph . Tires are 235/70-15

    Dirty Dug,
Am interested in the pumpkin. How early? hoping for something from the '70's. Does it have filler hole? Looking one with 4 vert ribs and 4 hori. ribs.
    Condition and price?
    Thanks,
    Lou

The problem with the 3:80 or lower (ratio)gear set is that your first gear will feel very low with a T-5,
I have a T-5 with 3:25s in my '37 Chevy with 235/75/15s and it runs 1900 at right around 70mph. 1st gear feels like the car has 3:90 - 4:11s.
I also have a T-5 in my '66 Fairlane with 3:50 gears and the same 235/75/15s.
First gear in the Fairlane feels like it has 4:56 gears, or lower.
I am happier with the way the 3:25s feel than I am with the 3:50 gears.
I think if you go lower (ratio) than 3:50s, you might be unhappy with how fast the car goes through 1st gear.
I have already considered replacing my Fairlane's 3:50s with 3:25s. The Fairlane is right on the edge, at least for me, with the 3:50s. If it's gear ratio was any lower I would definitely swap them out for for 3:25s.

one thing I found out from doing rearends is people do not break them in or follow the
break in proceedure and it causes gear whine , when we reset a new gear set we let it sit on the lift in gear and let it run for 20 minutes to help lap the set in before we put a real load on it , and then we tell the customer to follow the 500 mile rule ( in the instructions ) and tell them to come back to change out the fluid . most guys get in the car and beat on them 2 miles from the shop . and comback bitching about the howl .
and the teeth show it .

as for selection rule the rule of thumb is on a gas vehicle its where you cruise the most at should be around 2000 rpm for a smaller cammed car , closer to the max torque of a race style cam , and if you use a automatic . make sure your convertor is locked ( stalled ) at your cruise speed . and you can go a little stiffer on the ratio with a auto because of the torque multiplication .

for a diesel its cruise at the 1-200 below max torque for milage .

Thanks bob, I will have to rethink all this. Thought I would just change gears and be done with it but the more I research the more confused I get. A guy gets so many different opinions.
