    Well here we go. I just picked up this 64' Olds Dynamic 88 Convertible and have begun the process of creating and period correct custom. The car has been stripped down so the pics will start rolling in to keep everyone updated on the progress. One question I do have is in regards to wheels. I have done some research for 60's customs and see that a lot of cars were running supreme wheels or chrome reverse rims. Which do think is more suited for the car I am doing. As for the rest of the car , I must say that I got very lucky as it is rock solid everywhere. The car was previously restored and kept out of the elements which definitely helped with its over all condition. I am planning on going with a silver base paint with panel pinstriping through out. Here are a few pics of the car as I received it and a couple of the dustless blasting that I started on it.

    Nice car. Unusual choice for a custom, but looks like a good solid car.

    How are you liking the dustless blasting? I don't know much about it other than the promo videos. Looks too good to be true.

    Yes it is different as far as customs go, but I think its a great candidate to do something different compared to an impala, galaxie etc. The dustless blasting is the only way to go. It took me 6 hr. to do the entire car in side and out. Please keep in mind that this car had been skimmed in filler to get it flat which is why it took a bit longer. I can typically do a full size car in about 2 1/2 hrs. ( I have the db 225 which has a run time of about 1/2 before it needs to be refilled which take about 5 min. each time. My painter cannot believe how well it works as he was worried about panel warpage. I was skeptical when I first seen it but I have used this unit on everything from cars to concrete to wood and have had nothing but great results with little effort.

    Hey, cool convertible, i have a 64 jetstar 1 hard top, same basic body style. i am also doing the mild custom thing. have astro supreme's on mine. did a tube grill and lakes pipes. am in the process of installing a 700r4 trans, it's a pain in the ass. good luck!

    What kind of adapter are you using to get the tranny paired up to the 394?

    As I'm sure you know, the default grill style for a '60s style custom is a tube grill. Don't go that route! I get that it's "traditional". It's also very boring. Barris, The Alexander Brothers, George Busti, Winfield, and others were customizing newer cars in the 1960s which featured grills and taillights that came from a variety of sources, or were hand built using various materials/production pieces.

    There are tons and tons of neat 1960s grills that could be put in there. Same thing with the taillights. Check out a book called "The Ultimate Car Spotter's Guide 1946-1969" By Tad Burness. It shows every American car from all angles, in period photos & illustrations. There are tons of ideas to be had in that book, or other books by the same author.

    I know it's easy for me to say (because I don't have to spend the money or do the work) but I guarantee if you do something with this car that is more than the standard generic 1960s mild custom (nose, deck, lowering, and that's it) that everyone else does, you will have something unique and it will get you a lot more admiring glances than the more common styles. That's just my 2 cents. Good luck whatever direction you go in!

    I got a adapter kit from bentsen's transmission center, 763-767-4480. you have to use a earlier lower bellhousing and starter or go with one of there mini starters. i went with the mini starter. you will have to cut the floor for bell housing clearance, build new rear engine mounts and a trans mount as the stock trans. didn't have a mount all. then of course there's the shift linkage and driveshaft mods. i expected it to be a pain but it has excided my expectations! I am really happy with the look of the tube grill on my car but to each there own!

    I applaud your choice of vehicle. I am also doing a '64 Olds 98 Custom Sport. I've shaved the handles, and gas filler door, removed most of the chrome, and louvered the hood. I put a fuel cell in the trunk. I also had Dakota Digital build a dash unit for me, using the old housing. I am running a 454 with a TH350, and Lokar shifter. I installed lake pipes with electric cut-outs. I plan on lowering it with an air ride suspension kit. I also converted the front drums to discs. Good luck and happy cruising.

    Cool project. Astros or chrome steel wheels would look nice on there, either one, with skinny white wall tires on them. No wide whites, and to really be period correct, they should be 14".

    My '64 98 was more lowrider than custom, but I had Raders on it with gold stripe tires and I always liked that look. Plus bellflower tips, dual antennas, and a real low ride height.

    That 98 sport coupe is weird, it doesn't have the "impala" style roof with the rib's like an 88, and doesn't have the concave rear window like the jetstar, not sure I've ever seen one.

    They are the same as the roof of a cadillac and buick electra's. I had a 66' 98 coupe when I was 16. Had wide whites on it with riviera wire wheels. Total gangster ride like something from Goodfellas! Sweet car to have at 16. sSure wish I would have kept it.

    Saw this one, on display, at Charlotte Auto-Fest, this week. Bone Stock, but very nice nonetheless. As usual, back bumper had rusted, in normal spot. Not looking forward to fixing mine.

    WOW, she looks beautiful G.P.A.D. Looks like you stole my idea of silver pearl.;) Want to do my '64 98 in silver with black vinyl roof. Great wheel n tire combo as well.
    Had the pleasure of viewing Kevin, from Virginia Hellion's' '64 Dynamic 88, up close and personal, at this years Daytona Turkey Rod Run. Glad to see these Oldsmobile's are getting the love they deserve.
