From the pic's can anybody tell me which end of this Burrell manifold faces to the front of the engine? There is an obvious difference if you look at the underside.
i don't think it matters. they are different because the manifold is a dual plane style. does it fit both ways?
Yes, it seems to fit both ways. There is an opening under and thru the manifold where exhaust gases flow, however they are directed towards one end rather than centrally across which could be either the front or rear depending which direction the manifold is installed. I'd prefer to install correct if it matters...
The mounting is symmetrical, so that doesn't matter. If there are throttle linkage mountings or something like that, then install it so those work. The heads will also bolt on either way, but to hook up the water pump they need to have the water outlets pointing forward.
Thanks for that info. Yes, I've just done the heads and this is my next job to deal with and just wanted to be sure I had that manifold the right was round. Trying to avoid those 1%ers that always seem to get me.
Most manifolds have a slight angle to the carb mount. To make up for the engine sitting slightly nose high in the frame. So the manifold goes on with the carb flanges level. Is the Burrell different?
Rich, I took a closer look at the manifold to see if there was a slope bias, but it was not noticable so I set it on the bench and using a straight edge and tape and noted that there is no slope as per your suggestion. Totally flat...
Wow, nice find! I thought I read somewhere that on that intake, the script on top should be able to be read from left to right on the driver's side... wish I could find that link... If you're floating around in the tacoma, washington area and not in Co, i'd love to come and take a lot at your mill. I'm building the same one (well, you know that). Good luck, sorry I wasn't more help
Russ, I always put them on so the script is readable on the drivers side, but it really doesn't matter. Those ports simply divert some of the siamesed exaust into the bottom tunnels of the intake, to warm the carb. I made plates, and blocked them off on the hotrod engine, then we cut them out to enlargen the exhaust on the FlatCad. Hope this helps!
Thanks Buddy, I like the block off idea and I recall looking at your flatcad engine build with exhausting setup. OK script to drivers side, sounds good.
Anybody ever seen or owned one of these linkages. Is it progressive and how does it actually achieve the progression??? It is the 2nd time this week I've had a copy of this linkage setup sent to me. I've never seen it before then...
Here is another real sweet looking setup another flathead HAMB member recently sent me. If you have a carb setup please post it...
Looked like we'd fail the required drivers 'line of sight' in the chopped pickup so to ensure Rego permit, needed to get carbs down.. top of filters would have been near 7' above cowl line.. Got lucky and found a 1980's B&M cross ram style plenum which will satisfy all requirements, aside from looking kind of different. In the pics it is sitting about an inch too high as yet to get a 4bbl blower/plenum adaptor, for the moment, just sitting on a Imperial dual 2 bbl mount.
Nice find, should work out just right for your project. It would be great if we/somebody could convince Mr Burrell to cast a manifold with a universal mounting face that could be worked for various other setups besides twin carbs.
