What's with the quality of drill bits nowadays…or lack of?

I try to get all of my drills from Industerial suppliers like MSC or Enco.
I was lucky enough to buy several 100 puonds of assorted size drills at
Boeing surplus befor they closed a few years ago, probably a lifetime
supply for this old man.

All I use are Dewalt "Bullet tip" bits and "Viking" brand standard bits (made in MN) The Dewalt set I've had for years and the only ones I replace are the small sizes because they usually break. If you use a quality cutting fluid your bits should last a while. An old retired machinist told me one time what he does is heats up the drill bit cherry red and quenches it in "Iodine". He said he was doing this process for many years and only uses the cheapest drill bits he can find. He said they are the best cutting bit you will ever use after this process. I've never tried it but maybe one day I will!

 

I like the dewalts as well.

X2 on the Drill Dr. I have a couple boxes of bits I bought years ago at Boeing Surplus, damm I miss that place. Used to buy by the pound! Now just sharpen when needed.

 

Just an observation, for the ° sign hold "alt" key and type in 0176. I played hell figuring it out. Works every time and I know, it's not intuitive. But hell, I didn't write the darn program.

 

My brother bought a small drill index and brought it to the shop (after he broke a number of mine)

I left it by the bench drill press, and one day took a 3/16" out, chucked it, and proceeded to drill through a pilot hole already there.
This drill bit actually bound up, and BENT! Like a fu6in' nail!
I took it out, and taped it to the backwall behind the drill press.
I wrote, "If you break a tool, you will pay ME for it. Not some Chinese peddler with cut rate sh1t."
Darnedest thing I ever saw...(besides my brother)
