History What happened to the Hot Rod Shop in Detroit?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Lucky77, Jul 17, 2008.

  1. Someone here on the HAMB was writing a book about Bill Waddill. My Dad knew him in the '50s, he installed the McCulloch supercharger in my Dad's '55 Chevy. His name pops up here time-to-time.

Did anyone ever "validate" where the Hot Rod Shop was exactly located on Grand River? I also searched via Google Maps & located an empty field & church.....below is a decal from the shop, along with some sponsored advertising from 1966.

A couple of Detroit old-timers I talked to remember the shop being on the west side, toward Telegraph on Grand River.....?

It looks like the building is long gone if you put the address in the sticker on Google maps and look at the street view. But at least there isn't a Walmart there.

Glad to hear the news, keep us informed on what your doing.

Are you related to the original shop and owners?

Reviving an old thread I thought I'd add my .02. Jgavrile nailed the location. I went to Wilbur Wright H.S. 64-67 on 12th near Grand river. One of the guys we called "meece" in our auto cl*** worked there as a "gopher" after school. Sometimes we would skip a cl*** & go down there to listen to the "old guys" & their stories. Being 16-17 yrs old I thought I was in a holy place listening to saints. I still remember seeing all the hot rod parts & engines laying around. We would call the stuff antique racing parts now. 66 was probably the last time I was there. After the 67 riot everything in that area burned, moved or closed down.
