Welcome! Depends on what you want out of your truck. if you plan on taking it out on the open highway or driving it a lot the six, isn't very fun, especially with the factory low gears in the rear to compensate for the low horsepower. I had a 230ci flathead six in my 57 Dodge pickup and i wanted to take it out but where i lived at the time you have to get on the highway and its a two lane at 65 and my truck topped out around 45 so wasn't fun having people honk and flip you off, while p***ing you. if you want to stay original i would find a nice poly and change the rear end gears out. but if you want convenience go with a 360LA with a 8-3/4 rear out of a B-body Mopar like i did. dont regret it one bit. just my 2Cents. and Welcome again and if you want more advice on anything on this truck head over here> http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=752370 ^ This is the thread where all the 48-60 Dodge/Fargo truck guys handout you will definitely get the answers you seek over there.
LOL, thought I was the only one people honked at and flipped off. True, depends on what you want to do. I love to drive 'em so a reliable old school v8 is the way I go. If it's already smoking you already know your going to do something with it soon.
