I want to put an electronic ignition on my 1948 ford 6 cylinder flathead. The distributor is a 7HA 12127. How do I figure out which electronic ignition to put on it? And where can I buy it at online? It's been converted to a 12 volt
When I bought my 53 last year, this was in the trunk. New and never installed on my 239. I been considering going ahead and installing this upgrade. Is this set actually any good and reliable? replacement parts? You might look into the same one if it gets a green light here.
Me and my 16 year old daughter put one of the "Hot Spark" systems in her 1969 VW Beetle, and so far it is sound and proves reliable. Very easy install too. She actually did it herself with me simply as an advisor.
You can change any 12V -ground car with points, to electronic ignition without changing the distributor at all. I use a Ford thick film ignition module from the 90s. Get the module, wiring and coil from the U pik it junk yard. Try and find one with the remote module on an aluminum heat sink they were used on Probes, Tbirds, and Aerostar vans and possibly others. The one off the distributor will work, it is the same, but the one with the heat sink is prettier. The module works with your stock points. The points act as a trigger and carry almost no current, therefore they will last for the life of the car or until the rubbing block wears out, 50,000 to 100,000 miles.
I ordered the kit from hot spark today even though they told me it wouldn't work for my 1948. They said it's for a 1949 and up 6 cylinder. Their website say it will fit the 7HA 12127 series and the pictures they showed match what I have so I just bought it. Should be in by Friday.
It is the earlier version they are fine if you DO NOT leave the key on for too long with the engine off,some folks keep their points with them just for safety.
