I was trying to start my car and it failed. Upon further investigation I pulled the distributor cap and noticed only one set of point firing (sparking) as I turned the engine over. I pulled the distributor, doubled checked the gaps, and then slightly ground the some material off the bottom of the points. Reinstalled and the same thing. The points are brand new. I pulled it back out and flip flopped the set of points and again only the one set is firing. Is there something I am missing??? I don't understand why only the one out of the 2 is firing. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Ok, I am under the assumption that the "spark" would come from the 2nd set of points when cranking? Meaning they are not both suppose to "spark" when cranking the engine over. My issue is that only the one set is "sparking" and it's whatever position I decide to put that set of points in the distributor at (Primary or secondary). Now why would this be?
Is there a wire jumping from one set of points to the other? It coulda been wired for a rev-pol setup that uses 2 condensers and a different coil and the points are wired seperate on them
They are both wired to one side as they should be. They way I pulled them out is the way they were installed.
only thing I can add at this time is that I just put my Mallory on a dist. machine to see if it worked and both set of points were firing. It has the four lobe cam. I am almost certain that both have to fire. Email Bubba as he can help with your questions
check to see-?? if the points set that you dont see firing?? has any wire/ terminal touching to ground?? even that the small isolator bushing & screw isnt grounding out?? if alls ok replace that set of points again!!
Nothing is grounding that set. The terminal is fine also since one set fires. I have the.old points I am going to try when I get home. I just have a hard time believing a new set of points that one is dead. But I imagine it wouldn't be the first time.
OK, four lobe with both sets wired together. Set gaps at .018 will run ok. Only one set should arc. One set is the make set ( makes the circuit) and the other set is the break set ( breaks to set for coil firing). When wired together as yours are the break set is the only set that should arc. Should be ok...
