    Carps,

You are more than welcome to cross the ditch for the Beach Hop - 26 to 30 April 2006. Actually, come over on Sat 22/004 and catch the Nostalgia Drags on Sunday 23/04.....

I'll give you the job of keeping the ****heads out! Just kidding - but I sure can relate to the ******** you put up with @ John's Picnic. This year I had a couple of different Rodders venting their spleen at me, right in my face, in full public view. I'm just a volunteer that puts his *** on the line to try and ensure everyone has a good time, at personal expense...... and you get treated like **** from a few. But the 99.9% who have smiles on their faces make up for it!

If you have an event that has specific entrant criteria, then it works both ways. The organisers must stick to what is promoted, as closely as possible, and entrants who try and push the boundaries should just piss off........

We are heavily promoting that OUR event is open to any pre-72 vehicle plus post 72 USA made vehicles if they belong to a recognised club or group. Simple as that! After all, the Beach Hop is about the 50's and 60's so we want the cars to reflect the era. Why the later USA cars? Simple - you don't see them everyday in NZ and they have a heritage that relates to Rock'n'Roll..... It is OUR show and WE decide what happens.

But I can still guarantee that some ***holes will try it on and give us grief......

    What is the solution?

  4. Trust me whjen I say you don't.

'I it didn't go unnoticed that you didn't seem to be looking at any of the cars. ;-)

  5. Loitering outside the gurlz dunnys! ;-)

  6. I don't disagree, but why post it here, where the orgainsers might not ever see it?

Why not contact the orgaiserss directly and tell them politely what you thought of the event?

If only it was just one long day slaving in the sun. Fact is, there's a whole lot more happening in the months leading up to the event and a lot of things have to be in place before simply opening the gates and watching the cars roll in.

A lot of the mags are fitted to what many consider true blue Kuustoms and bonaafide pre 1948 hot Rods. Likewise a lot of the mullets came in behind the wheel of these cars, I don't wear a ducktail or have any tattoos, but to me these things don't detract from the picnic, thay add to it's character. Their inclusion in the event, helps make it unique and gives it that special something that more restrictive events simply don't have.

Like you, if the car doesn't interest me, I walk past and look at those that do.

Last year the big whinge was about how hard it was to get thru the gates. This year, the guys manning the gates devised a plan to make sure it was easier for everybody. One element of their plan involved encouraging people to pre-enter and giving these pre entries a dedicated no stopping entrance. So, how many took up this offer and actually did pre enter? About the same number as any other year, which is not many.

The second part of their plan was to make sure those who did enter on the day got in quickly and soothly without blocking the highway or boiling their engines. Did it happen? I believe it did and considering almost 2,500 cars rolled thru the gates this year, the small crew resonisible for getting them in did an absolutely brilliant job. Did anybody thank them? Not that I know of.

And in the tradition of 'damned if you do, damned if you don't' we had the neighbours complaining that they couldn't get a good look at the cars because they were not stopped in the street long enough.

Did people whinge because we closed the main area to vehicle access at 9:00? A few did.

Did anybody stop to consider that we have a responsibility to people's safety, not to mention the need to comply with OH&S laws, when it comes to cars cruising where there's a lot of people walking? Nope.

Did the 'power-parkers' who blocked off around 150 premium parking spaces adjacent to the main area, freely move so others could park on the gr*** behind them? Nope! In fact some of them told me, "****-off, I was here first!" when I asked them if they would consider the needs of their fellow event participaants. The rest simply ingrned my pleas over the P.A. and didn't return to their cars.

Put us in touch with the bands and we'll gladly negotiate a fee and schedule with them. Did anybody notice the bands who were booked to play but never turned up? Didn't think so, and we wouldn't expect you to.

There's an issue of power supply to drive their equipment, which the vendors also require. And running high voltage cables on wet gr*** also creates some other safety issues.

Y'see OH&S regulations limit our ability to run cables all over the facility. And whist you may not have noticed, the OH&S and health inspectors were present and very busy all day long.

I agree, that's why we've never ignored any constructive criticism. However, as stated previously I'd also prefer that if anybody has such advice, they take it directly to the organisers attention, not post it on a foreign bulletin board where the organisers might never see it.

Yes, your $10 or $20 helps cover the cost of the event, but it's not your $10 or $20 that goes on the table up front, months before, in order to make it happen.

Additionally, if the weather turns to **** your money stays in your pocket, but the orgaisers don't get theirs back.

And I'd also venture to add, there's very few events anywhere that offer similar value for money. It costs something like $60 to $90 to attend a footy match and then you get screwed for food and drink on top of that.

If everyone were to forward their suggestions directly to the organisers, i'm sure they'd be happy to do that.

  7. I think everybody has made some good points.

However, my point is, if you want aan event organiser to hear you, those points should be made directly to the orgainsiers, not on a bulletin board where the orgainisers might never see them.

As for the comment on Summernat's, I'm not sure I understand. far as i can see, that event previously dedicated to late model based Street Machines is actually being infiltrated in recent times by pre 1948 hot rods, not the other ay 'round.

  8. That timing might be too good to refuse.

That's why we keep coming back for more, eh. ;-)

The picnic has always be open to Rods, Customs AND 'Special Interest Vehicles', which covers the Restorations, Muscle cars and yes, even the ****** Toranas.

    HOW DARE YOU!

    Happens all across the world.

******ed if i know, but when I figure it out, I'll be taking a vacation. Cos I reckon I'lll be able to sell it for millions.

  9. 'The Picnic' AKA 'John's Picnic' AKA 'The Rod and Kustom Picnic', has ALWAYS included Rods, Customs and other Special Interest Vehicles. It's also always had the following disclaimer..... "No Rules, No ********, No politics, Just a bunch of entusiasts having a good time enjoying the party." or words to that effect.

The H.A.M.B. has a very specific set of rules which are made as clear as possible as is the owner's perogative. At KOA we hate rules, so the major rule is that there are no rules other than the rules we must obey to run a safe event and remain within the law of the land as well as the rules we must enforce to meet the requirements of the owners of the venue we are using. No more, no less.

That's not up to us to decide, it's up to the people who own the H.A.M.B.

The ricers probably wouldn't bother participating.

If they did, some who are here would not be happy. Would i care? probably not.

I have just reviewed the video I shot at the very first 'Picnic' and guess what? The variaety of cars is no different to what was there this year, only the number have changed. So based on your logic, what's the problem?

It was the dislike of 'strict rules' that created the Picnic in the first place, thus what you are asking is for us to forgo our roots and revbise the event to fit a set ofd 'Rules' not of our own making.

And we have never not listened to or tried to respond positively to any constructive criticism from those who help make the event. HHowever, if three people dislike an aspect of the event and three thousand don't, gues who wins?

And that's exactly what this years Picnic delivered.

Yep, fair cop Carps. That probably was wrong. It's just that this is where I talk to rodders. Shoulda given it more thought.

Still reckon when your event is as big as it has become you need to consider what people are coming to see and just maybe have a car park for regular cars.

Geez, Carps. When you e-maild me that you'd lost a ton of weight and were as skinny as me, I thought you were just kidding.

As for being a gate nazi, I've been there, done that. For over a decade I pulled 8+ hour shifts at the Ty-Rods Old Timers Reunion. We had a cut-off of '59 back then.

It's somewhere around '72 now and the event's gone down the tubes. It's little more than a Sunday cruise event. Years ago you had to get your pre-entry letter back in the mail on the same day the application arrived or you were **** outa luck. This year the club was roughly a month away from the event and they were less than 70% of capacity.....and that's with the late models, too.

I quit going to the CANATS when they went to a 25 year sliding scale. Prior to that, I'd made 23 of 'em.

I don't go to Greedguys events (unless I get a free motel room and can't see p***ing that up) 'cause the events draw too many gold-chainers. (ask Dirty Doug 'bout that)

Don't think that getting big is the answer to your woes. It'll tear down the event over time.

  16. A bit late to drag this one back to the top, but....

Note below a local mini enthusiast's view of the Picnic, prior to the event:

That kind of view would certainly explain the idea that it's not a niche event....???

It could, possibly, one day be as big and diverse as the "Picnic at Hanging Rock" event.

.......Hell, maybe people are confusing the two????

  17. Probably get roasted for this, but I reckon it's topical and fits this thread.

Coming up is the 41st Annual Hot Rod and Custom show at the Royal Exhibition Buildings in Melbourne.

How many of you hard core hot rodders have enetered as individuals or for club displays?

Looking at the entry list I already know the answer and I figure you're all smart enough to figure it out without me actually spelling it out.

    NONE!

SO what happens to our contries oldest indoor show. The people who say they are so p***ionate about hot rodding just let it die coz they couldn't be ****ed cleaning up thheir cars or taking a couple of days out of their valuable schedules to show of their bonafide hot rods and customs.

Or...... my favourite. "My car is a driver so I'll be there for the outdoor show on whichever day, I choose to be there."

Problem with that is, if there's no show inside the building, there's no show outside. Another problem this creates for the organisers is that the paying public, the people needed to keep the show alive and pay the rental on the building etc, come along have a free show outside and then go home withhout checking what's inside. Additionally thhe rodders don't pay to go inside because there's no ****ing hot rods in the show. DOH!

This shhow is an Aussie ins***ution, it's opened thhe eyes of many who would otherwise not have a clue about hot rodding, it's opened the eyes of politicians and lawmakers to the good side of our hobby and over the years helped ensure the longevity of our hobby. It'd be a real shame to see it die because the very odders it is for, are to apathetic or just to complacenmet to patrticipate, for whatever lame reasons we cann all come up with.

And I can just see the posrts here now. "What a lame hot rod show it was, filled with late model Chevs and Street Machines that don't belong there!"

Well guys, if that happens, and you did not actively participate or encourage and ***ist your motes to p[articipate and keep this show alive, then you've only got youselves to blame. Like I said, this event is an ins***ution, I don't want to see it die, so I've already put my hand up to do my bit to help, what are you going to do?

first of all interesting thread, heard most of the Kardinal boys comments before and i know how they feel. but at the same time, what if i was to have rocked up in my val, unable to get in because she was post 67. that would have really ticked me off. because hey, i liked her lines, she was all i could afford and i changed her and she taught me a lot about what i can and cant do to future projects.
it's not the dates that matter to me.
if someone was to get a 2004 monaro, strip the panels. replace beat and kustomise them. i'd be interested, but she'd in theory be out in the paddock no matter what'd been dont to her
    doesn't cut it with me.
hey i had a great day and Gin was my freind.
