If you are talking OEM, then I believe it would be 1953 Cadillac Eldorado. Eldo's had dual quads through '57. '58-'60 had tri-power. Also Chrysler 300 letter cars had dual quads from the early fifties as well. Aftermarket stuff appeared about the same time, I know Edelbrock had a small port Y-Block 2x4 in about '54 for the new at the time engine. I'm sure there were others as well.
i was thinking more along the lines of who came up with the concept. But OEM info is nice too. Thank you.
Thank you for clarifying that. I think it was Budweiser, the clydesdales pulled 8 barrels on the wagon (that's 2X4, right?)
After people fitted eight-twos it is hardly a quantum leap to fit two four barrels. Nobody woke up one day and though "Hey, eureka, we could fit TWO of those". I'd bet as soon as the first four barrel came out a guy was cutting aluminum to adapt a manifold.....
The first American 4 barrel was the Stromberg 4A. It preceeded the WCFB by a year and a half. 1953 I believe, on the Buick.
The Stromberg and the Teapot on Fords were the first I remember. Had a 4A back when, not a bad little carb. I put it on a Ford and dumped the "Towering Inferno!" Hated Holleys ever since!
As far as original P***ENGER equipment on cars produced in the USA: Single four barrel: Carter WCFB - 1952 (894s - 1952 Buick 70) Holley 2140 - 1953 (List R-771-A a.k.a. EAD-9510-H1 1953 Lincoln) Rochester 4GC - 1952 (7004300 - 1952 Oldsmobile) Stromberg 4A - 1952 (7-72 - 1952 Buick 70) The Carter WCFB and Stromberg 4A were released within a couple of weeks (I have the release dates of each, but on microfilm, and I'm lazy!). I do not have the release date (other than production year) of the Rochester 4GC and the Holley 2140. As far as production p***enger dual four barrels on cars produced in the USA: Cadillac, Chrysler, and Packard all released dual 4's in 1955. Cadillac (7007240 front, 7007241 rear A/C, 7007942 no A/C) Chrysler (2444s front, 2445s rear) Packard (7008230 front, 7008231 rear) Other than production, I don't know. Jon.
Carter 4 barrel prototype: http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/Carter_WCFB_prototype_side.jpg Note the bronze airhorn. Somewhere, I have a picture of the Stromberg 4A prototype, but cannot find it. Will take another tomorrow if I don't forget. Jon.
When did Corvette first offer 2 - 4's? Was it 55 or 56? The hot rodders were slow to take up the 4 barrel, they were too expensive and they were used to working with Stromberg 2 barrels off Fords. Aftermarket manifold makers offered 3-2's for all the new OHV V8s long before they made a 2 - 4 . So, the Detroit auto makers were the first with 2-4s.
Earliest four barrel I know of was on the Napier Sabre engine in a Hawker Typhoon fighter plane in WWII, does that count????
I got 3 WCFBs a 2080 1952-55 olds , so did olds have a Carter 4 bbl in 1952 ? and when did the WCDs first come out
First Corvette dual fours came in the '56 year model and were also an option on Chevy p***enger cars that year.
