I am about to start unchanneling my '32 5w. The subrails are gone, the floor is there from the seat pan back. But its completely rigged. (I wonder sometimes what goes through someone's head when they do the things they do. Having said that, this car was last modified in 1963.) The lower B pillar and lower A pillar mounting places where they bolt to the floor/subrail are gone also. I am thinking about buying the subrail/floor combination already attached, and then the lower B pillar and A pillar pieces as well. It's pricey, but it might save me lots of headaches. I have a pristine original frame and a very good original firewall. I know that the firewall sets the height of the body I need to go by in the front, but what about in the rear? Where do I set the body there? Am I right in thinking that once I have the body on the firewall, and the rear mounting point located, then that will determine where my A and B Pillar mounts are to be? Is that right? Also, how many mouting points to the subrail is there on the entire body itself? Thanks!
Buy some 5W subrails from United Pacific and work from there up. Remember the very back of the subrails do not fit hard against the top of the frame. Ford did that so the door alignment could be tweeked.
ok thanks for the replies. How does the rear fender locate the back of the car? How many mounting points to the subrail is there on the entire body itself? Once I have the body on the firewall, and the rear mounting point located, that will determine where my A and B Pillar mounts are to be right?
I would guess that the rear fender bolts to the running board. Which is sitting on a frame bracket bolted or riveted to the frame.
put a stock gas tank in place ( ***uming the rear frame horns are there), there should be about 3/8" clearance between the tank and the bottom of the back of the body. If you have the 1/16" body webbing under the subrails, then you should have it under the tank also.
The rear fender bolts to both the frame itself & the body, so installing the fenders sets the body at the correct height.
If you want the best possible foundation for your body use the floor ***embly from United Pacific. It's a little pricey but it'll make for a solid body. They also have all the small parts to do the job right.
If you use the gas tank clearance method, you might want to be sure your frame isn't bent from bottoming against the axle. This can cause the rear frame horns to be bent down, and the tank to be lower. Here is the Wescott's frame blueprint: http://www.wescottsauto.com/WebCatalog/Tech/FrameDiagram1932.pdf
How many mounting points to the subrail is there on the entire body itself? Still trying to get this answer. I figure... 1. At the lower A pillar. 2. At the lower B pillar. 3. And I think 2 each side behind the B pillar in the trunk area. So 8 total.... If anyone knows for sure chime in.. thanks
