Hey all!! At the risk of sounding like a rookie (which I am) I am going to do my best to describe the latest issue with my Buick and hopefully you guys can give me some insight and direction! I have a '53 Buick Super with the original 322 V8 with the original Dynaflow trans. I was cruisin with my fiancé on Sunday and long story short, had to get towed home (clogged fuel filter). The tow company that picked me up brought a flatbed, loaded up the Buick, strapped her down good by connecting to the frame, the E-brake on and the trans in neutral. When we got home I couldn't get her in Park so I engaged the E-brake, kept her in neutral and left her for the night. Today after work I picked up the fuel filter got home and swapped it out and she fired right up. Now, here is what I found that isn't so good...

    1. I cannot get the gear into park or reverse. If I go all of the way to the right with the shifter to hit R, it seems to engage the Low gear and creeps forward instead of reverse.

    2. The accelerator does not retract when I let my foot off of it...I have to physically lift the pedal with my foot. I was noticing too that when I rev the engine manually at the carb the linkage seems quite sloppy and I have to push it back to drop the rpms rather then it doing it by itself. I noticed that this "thing" didn't look right to me, but I am not sure what it it exactly (see picture attached) it seems really loose and it looks like it should be working with the accelerator linkage? (Looks like a silver spin top with a rubber piece at the bottom, having pic loading issues right now, sorry!)

I appreciate any guidance and info I can gather from you folks!

I'd say maybe you have a broken or collapsed rubber engine or trans mount. It's letting the engine & trans sag and now the controls are all mis-aligned & binding.

I believe this is an anti-stall dashpot. It's a vacuum operated device that keeps the throttle up a bit so the engine doesn't die when you suddenly drop the gas.

Auto trans cars typically had these until the digital age.

Ulu! Thanks for the thoughts! I'll see if I can locate a damaged mount and try to run down a new one of those vacuum anti stall things. I appreciate the replies!

Ulu, thanks for the help earlier! You were extremely correct! :) turns out both motor mounts, trans mount and thrust pad were all completely shredded. The motor and trans shifted about 1.5"-2" back and bound up the accelerator and shifting linkages. I tracked down all new parts, including a new dashpot. Everything is now back to normal!! Thanks again!! Glad to be back in the road!
