Customs Will full wheel covers fit "smoothie" steel wheels

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by jrusso, Apr 7, 2014.

  1. I searched, but did not seem to find a definitive yes or no to the question. My factory 49 wheels are very rusted throughout. So since I will need to source new wheels, I hoped that I could use the smoothies with a "Shannon cone" and then if I I later choose switch to a "Sombrero" style Caddy cover. Is that at all possible? I realize that the factory Cadillac covers are different in the way they mount than the reproductions. I am mainly referring to the re-pro stuff here, as I am pretty sure the originals are defiantly a no go.
    Any advise appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Jon

The bead flange of the wheel is the same diameter for a given size...i.e. 15" or 16", etc. are the same as any other 15", 16" etc. So, any wheel cover designed for a 15" wheel should fit any other 15" wheel in that dimension.

The issue that arises is the contour of the wheel center and/or the 'frontspacing'.

Some Caddy caps, especially those legitimately known as 'Sombrero' were used with OEM wheels that were quite deeply offset on the front side. Many Caddy wheels look like they were put on backward, though they are not.

So, the depth required for the caps you want to use should be determined before you buy wheels, or the caps themselves, for that matter.

  3. Thank You for the quick response. I sort of figured as much. No magic bullet, so to speak.
The "Wheel Smith" is not that far from me here is So Cal. They seem to be able to make some custom back spacing and other configurations for adapting certain caps etc.
Sounds like I will be paying them a visit.
    Thanks again for the info.
