    Well hey, everyone.

I took home a thermal imaging camera from work today, for some authorized practice time. Of course after I finished the serious stuff ... my mind turned to the car. Flatheads love to get hot!

Here's an infrared ("predator vision") picture I took of my engine, followed by the standard visible-light photo.

I know HAMBers come from all sorts of different occupations ... anyone else take any photos like these?

That intake manifold and fuel feed pipe are pretty hot.

The exhaust manifold is the one on top, actually. And the small line running upwards is the heat pipe for the choke.

    Makes sense, thanks for posting.

  7. The impressive thing is to do something like that in a windowless garage. When you turn off the lights the infrared image is still there because it is looking at heat and not light. The first time I saw an IR system it was in a laboratory without windows. My thought was that if my TV looked that bad I would call a repairman, then someone switched off the lights and the image was still there.

I use TIC's at work and they are a great tool. That is awesome using it on the engine, never thought to use it on that.

Not really the same kinda photo, but these were taken at night, with camera on long timing shot, and a red laser flashed at the car back and forth while taking photo

Neat. Reminds me of my photo recon days in the Army, when you could pick out that lone idiot who just HAD to have a smoke out in the forest on a moon-less night - giving his whole unit's position away! Don't the dyno tuners use these kind of tools, too? Gary

This view really shows how the heat deflector under the carb makes a big difference in the temp of the carb! Great shot.-MIKE:cool:

These were taken a few years ago by my neighbor.

You can see where the exhaust is hitting the ground in this shot.

  18. That could be very useful in conjunction with your normal temp gun!

I can grab temperature readings from anywhere on the image, just like I'm using a temp gun. It's a beautiful piece of equipment.

  23. I used to do thermal imaging for a living. Did you notice the rear of the 57's front fender is warmer? Engine compartment air is heating up that area, but not the front of the fender. Fresh air vents are in the way.
Can use the thermal gun to find dead cylinders or blocked radiator tubes.

Hi-tech meets old stuff. Bore scopes, thermal imaging, and some worry about the internet's role in this stuff?

Light painting. An old technique using a new tool.
Never thought of that. Way cool.

The guy that took the pictures of my car used the camera on his job. He would photograph electrical panel boxes, bearings on moving parts, all kinds of stuff. If the photos showed heat, then there was a possible problem and it could be repaired before a break down.

I need one of those camera's to locate the radiant heat tubes in my garage floor, but they are so damn expensive!!!

I'm surprised that the "off shore" industries have not started selling cheap knock offs at Harbor frieght stores yet!

If you know any Firemen, ask them if they have a camera. Our local department has one to check for hot spots behind walls.
