In need of highly detailed advice/instructions. I'm a machinist and have some experience cutting/welding/fabrication. Just got the old pile off the frame. I've got more ideas than I do time or money but I'm trying. Any help would be appreciated. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Search Ian Berky threads.. he did a shoebox and did a super job. Nix the idea of Hardtopping it... way to much work and point less if you don't reinforce it correctly!
Thanks for the info. I had a feeling that the hard top idea was probably not the best way to go. I do like the look though. I hate to kill the idea and then wish I would have stuck with it later though. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
You've got to have the knack for details if you desire a completed chop. Lowering the roof line is the easy part, working everything else out to completion is where the difficult stuff is.
I believe Motorbooks International has a book "How to Chop Tops"......worth the investment. Lots of pics and tips. Also, as recommended above...search here on the HAMB...several good threads on this subject.
To hardtop a post car usually ends up looking like **** around the vent window to top corners. Also roof rail to top of gl*** seal. Not so easy to do. Yes it can be done but for the first time around you might want to do some more thinking. Also, before cutting the top off put the body back on the ch***is and make EVERYTHING fit right and do all your rust repair. Then maybe cut the top. My best advice is to start with a 51 Vicky or at least look at one to see all you need to address when converting a Coupe. The Wizzard
X2 & I'd suggest you take a long look at any ''real'' hardtop vehicle from this era and take special note of the frame, body mounts cowl panel construction/Apost, cant rails & the sail panels. Too, look over the door latch hardware & window gaskets!
