Anyone have any suggestions on what to use for gasket material that wraps around the pedal shafts where they p*** through the floor? My old ones seemed to be made of felt and felt like were impregnated with wax. Of course they broke into pieces when I took them off the pedals and STUPIDLY I threw them away.
Left field & Quick off the top of my head- I'd grab a 300gsm (metric) weight 100% cotton watercolour paper sheet form an art supply store, cut it into size, slit, grease & layer it. Would not be fireproof though. And labour intensive too. There must be a better way.
Wouldn't rubber sheeting work? Ask a local roofer if you can buy a few feet off of a roll of rubber roofing, if they've ever done a rubber flat roof they should have a partial roll laying around. Its a pretty common roof for residential on old porches, home depot may sell it by the foot?
National Chevy might be worth a shot. These fit 49-54 Chevy P***enger cars. Accelerator Shaft Floor Seal Set #783- 2 cork and 1 felt - $6 Clutch and Brake Shaft Seal Set #785 - 2 felt pieces - $8
Here is what I used. Over size, Abrasion-Resistant Rubber Washers http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-rubber-washers/=rhmrf5 3/4" ID 3" OD 18 Thick Part # 90131A317 6.44 for 5 pcs I made a retaining to fasten to floor. Post picture later of retaining ring today. .
Originally they had a thick piece of felt that went over the pedal, it only sealed when the pedal was up. Or, some had a kind of rubber bellows seal. A square of felt carpet underlay or some kind of tough foam rubber. It fits over the pedal and goes up and down with it.
I am defiantly old school,I use strips of inner tube on both sides of the the pedals. Seals out heat and water. HRP
There are moulded rubber seals available for early Fords and a moulded bellows type seal for early Mopar products.
I've used MANY inne tubes fo such stuff. On my unibody I recently replaced the "seal" for the cowl vents. Went to the hobby store and got some new fangled foam/felt type stuf, works better than the old seals ever dreamed of and it was a whopping 99 cents for a sheet
You mean you don't need a web site to fix it? They make excellent gaskets for painted parts that may chip.
I too use a piece of a "leaky old inner tube" that I keep in stock. Has always worked for me. cheap and easy!
I have made them from felt boot liner. Also made the felt washers for truck door handls. Here's a link if you are not familiar,,a pair would keep you supplied for a few projects. You could impregnate them with Dubbin. Just saw you're in Edmonton,,,you know what these are! http://www.ebay.com/itm/FELT-INSOLE...t=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=&hash=item414c2d0a2c
Sounds like this could also be good as it is heat and flame resistant and less expensive... http://www.ebay.com/itm/12-X-12-INC...aultDomain_0&hash=item53fc3e7ca4#ht_784wt_662
