Good evening guys. I'm in this forum for four years now and have to admit that I have seen and learned a lot around the world of Hot Rods. I created this thread because I have some questions to do. Forgive my ignorance but i'm just confused with some models. My favorite models are three. I'm on the hunt for one of those three that i mentioned before with preference in an one like the one i have in my Avatar pic and pictured below, but in Europe it is a little bit difficult to find one. The Ford Model A coupe, the 3 window coupe and the 5 window. Year? Well here is the big question! Before i start to bore you with my questions i sat and i found information on the types i like. I do not understand something. What are the differences in the models below. Obviously it is the year of production. On the other hand i do not understand the 'nicknames' and differences between the models. Below i mention the types of each car. 1930 Ford Coupe 1931 Ford 5 window coupe 1931 Ford Model A coupe 1932 Ford Deuce coupe I hope not to bore you with my questions and if there are already threads with answering some of my questions i would appreciate it if someone could post the links here. Thank you in advance Best regards Gregory
Model A coupes are broke into two year groups -- 28-29 and 30-31. 1932 3 window coupes had suicide doors and 5 windows did not. A common hot rod mod is to put a 32 frame (or run a stock frame) under Model A sheetmetal and run a V8. We all call them A-V8's. My favorite is a 28-29 because it is the first Model A. 30-31 Model A's are more "deucy" in my opionion.
Back to basics: All 1928-1931 Ford automobiles were called Model A's. All Model A coupes were 5-window coupes (you don't count the windshield) and were available ONLY with 4-cylinder engines. In 1932, Ford introduced a redesigned car, available in either a V-8 or 4-cylinder engine. The 1932 Ford automobile was NOT called a "Model A". There were both 3- & 5-window coupes available in 1932. Does that help ?
the next person that calls a Model A coupe a 5w, I'm gonna kill a baby seal note to self...are there any baby seals in Oklahoma?
IF, it is a regular steel bodied coupe, it has 5 windows, and is just called a Model A coupe, for years 1928-1931. The 5 window part is just ***umed. There is a type of Model A coupe that was made during these same years that could be thought of as a three window coupe, but they're not often called that. This is the Sport Coupe, that had a soft top, regular doors w/ roll-up windows, and one back window. They were designed to look like the top would fold down, but it doesn't. The Model A that looks like a Sport Coupe, and has a folding top, along with partially folding window frames on the doors, is a Cabriolet. I think that this Model A version was only made in 1930-31. The Cabriolet body style was offered in later years also, after the Model A ended, but it would have been part of the same line-up for '32, or '33, or what have you. The Sport Coupe was not continued past '31, so that was a Model A only design. You might want to look at Carnut.com, under their Pictures Index. They are not complete, and some stuff is mis-identified, but it lets you compare a lot of different makes and styles. Later, *****6
us old farts have lost that battle Larry. "Model A 5 window" has evidently become accepted by the m***es. I blame former mini truckers who have infiltrated the hobby while nobody was looking.
I see. Thank you all for your help. You were very informative. Although i didn't understand what the 'nickname' Deuce stands for and by the way what type of Ford is the white one i have for my avatar pic. I believe it's a Model A but i don't know the year. Again guys thanks a lot for the help and for the link!
48ratfink and 3wLarry, I agree with you Guys !!! It is a "Model A Coupe" Period. I am also an Old Fart that just Smiles when someone calls a 37-38 Chevy Coupe a 5-window Coupe. Oh Well, it is a lot easier to smile than it is to explain.... Jeff
The one in your avatar is a 5 window. At one time that name bothered the hell out of me. I would have called it a 2 window or a 4 window or even a 6 window but why a 5 window? All I can figure is, they don't count the windshield as a window for some reason. Deuce is a slang term for 2. It refers to the 2 in 1932. They don't refer to any other car by a single digit of its year so, where that one comes from is also a mystery. Years ago in England they had something called a "6 light saloon" or a "4 light saloon". This did not refer to the electric fixtures in a drinking establishment. It meant a sedan with 6 or 4 windows, respectively. A long long time ago it was common to refer to a window as "a light of gl***" but this pretty well disappeared from use by 1850.
I have heard people refer to a "Model A five window" and I always wonder if they mean a coupe or a tudor sedan....
This was a prototype built by Ford but never went into production. But never the less it was a Model A 3 window.
One more thing, just to be clear. A "Deuce" refers to a 1932 Ford, not a '32 Chevrolet, Plymouth, or any other car. Don't ask me why, that's just how it is.
