Projects My 48 Plymouth Kustom

  1. Little mini update. Got the door tops put on. Interior back in. Rattle can primer job just to keep from rusting. I still got some little lumpy areas I need to block out and that shitty windshield is just temporary so I can drive this weekend. Didn't have time to get glass cut and order a gasket. Started it up for the first time since October and she's runnin great ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1391238540.176204.jpg ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1391238557.306165.jpg ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1391238572.793633.jpg

  2. I also started on the bumper guard tail lights. I think these are 49 or 50 chevy guards I got off fleabay. Impala lenses cut down so they fit in where the cone of the guard was.

Nice job so far, looks like good proportions. I'm not too far from you, maybe I'll get a chance to see this car up close sometime!

Any more updates. Really like this build.

  7. Thanks! Nothing new yet. I was sick the past week or so and haven't been in the garage much. Last time I was in there I spent the entire day cleaning and organizing. It was a disaster in there.

  8. I did steal this little picture from the cruise. No windows in 10 degree weather. No wonder I got sick haha ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1392265327.140468.jpg

    Nice work so far!

  10. Finally got my lazy ass back in the garage. Taking a little break and figured I'd post a quick little update. I've been kind of on the fence about peaking the hood, but I was looking at the car earlier and decided I'd go for it. Here's what I've done so far. Little by little... have you been driving it? Cool how you left the hood crest.

  12. I drove it that one day and that's it. It's still pretty cold here.

Got the hood peak pretty much done. And cut off my rusty old drip rails and made new ones out of 3/8" round bar. I don't have a tube bender so I just did it with my bench vise and the good ol' acetylene torch. I brought them all the way down to that belt line and am working on making them fade into that bodyline that goes around the back. I think it looks pretty cool. I was going to shave them completely but it looked so silly without them.

It's probably hard to see in the one picture but I also filled the holes where the wipers used to be.

things are looking good! I like how your blending in back into the already flowing lines itll play good on the diff angles of light.

  16. Finally getting some good weather out here. Been driving the Plymouth the past couple days. Nice to see the ol girl on the road again!! I also started doing my lake pipe pods and took a bunch of pictures of the process.

  17. ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1397246929.548479.jpg

So I started with some mild steel J pipe. Not stainless since I don't have a tig welder. 2 1/2" diameter since my actual lakes pipes are 2" diameter. Got these off eBay.

    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1397246936.628682.jpg

I cut half of the J curve off the pipe and used a little angle finder tool to do a 45ish degree angle. I just kind of went with what I thought looked good.

    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1397246946.592044.jpg

Then, since I don't have a tube bender, I carefully started bending some 1/4" round stock with my trusty vice. Checking the shape against the pipe as I went. It's hard not to kink the round stock doing it this way but it works if you're careful! This is how I bent the stuff for my hood peak and drip rails too.

    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1397246954.306953.jpg

Checking the shape. I figured it didn't need to go all the way around since you won't see the back anyways. And the pipe would stick out away from the body that 1/4" and look weird.

    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1397246965.930977.jpg

Once I was happy with the shape I welded those suckers on and cut off the excess with a cut off wheel.

    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1397246975.872727.jpg

Tacked in place. I cut a little notch out of my fender and will use some sheet metal and bondo to smooth everything out.

    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1397246984.842436.jpg

Little mock up to see how the pipes will fit in there. I cut the bends off the lakes and just slid them in there. I'm planning on making them functional but I'll run a pipe into the lakes further down so it doesn't heat up the paint on the pods once they're finished.

I'm still figuring out how to mount the actual lakes on there and tie them into the exhaust. This is about as far as I got.

    Thanks for looking dudes!!

Lookin good man. I'm slowly but surely getting some progress done on my 48 club coupe. We are running the same rear window and about the same chop. Have to check mine out. Mounting the lakes depends on how you wanna do it. If your gonna flex joint the pipes then they can be solid mounted. Couple of the members in my club have welded pipes through their frames and flexed them from the exhaust to the pipe in the frame. Then from there ran the pipes from the other side to the lakes. I took the standard clamps and welded them to the backside where you wouldn't see them and ran nutserts into my floor crossmembers and bolted them up.

  20. Right on man I think I may have looked at your build before! Yeah I was thinking about using like the back half of the clamps and welding them to the pipe. My buddy suggested welding some bungs to the back of the pipe and mounting them to brackets on the body or frame.

yeah thats what I did for mine was weld the back curve and mounting tab to the pipe. Gives it a floating appearance. The bungs would work to. I'll be waiting to see what you decide to do.

  22. Well I'm an idiot and decided to be cheap and lazy and put a temporary (again...TEMPORARY) rattle can paint job on my car for the summer. Instead of just rocking black primer. I found what looked to be a cool really dark satin red. I've done rattle can paint before and had people say "wow that's really rattle can?!?" so I figured why the hell not. Yeah dark satin wound up being fucking fire truck red. But it turned out to be a blessing in disguise and revealed some lumpy areas I need to address that were hidden by the black primer.

So I learned two lessons. One...rattle can paint jobs are for chumps. And two...don't skip the guide coat.

I've also been slowly doing my tail lights. I think they look alright. Good enough for a driver anyway.

    Thanks for looking dudes!

  28. Haven't updated in a long time. I've gotten a bunch done on my car. Trying to get back on the road this summer! I decided to take my old grille off and make a new opening that will fit a 52 (i think) Plymouth grille. I have one but it's not the best so I'm looking for a better one if anyone has any leads!

Me and a couple buddies got a Gambino Taildragger kit put in. Took way longer than I thought!

Most recently I've started rebuilding my floor and figuring out the gas tank. The gas tank takes up most of my trunk space so my compressors and air tank will be where the back seat used to be. So I'm building the new floor to be like a shelf for that stuff to sit on.

And here's what she's lookin like right now... just because cars are cool
