Technical MSD and Mallory distributors

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by aussie oldie, Apr 19, 2014.

  1. Does anyone know what the difference is between the Mallory unilite, which is advertised with LED trigger and the MSD ready to run, which has magnetic trigger. Is one better than the other??

I've never used an MSD, but I have used Mallory Unilite's for 40 years with no problems.
You must run a resistor to bring the voltage back to 9 volts for the distributor and the module can be blown if there any voltage spikes or arc welding on the car.(just unplug the distributor)
the other advantage of the Unilite is that is is very compact. It will fit with multiple carb set ups and blowers.

I'm not an expert but I used to think MSD was snake oil. Until I witnessed my buddy make gains across the board during a dyno session. I decided to try one and now I won't use anything else.

I've also run Unilites for years with zero problems, even in a daily driver that was on the road for 5 years. My current Unilite does chew up the carbon contacts in the cap quickly, but that was my fault......I bought the drag race version that has a different ****on setup than the street version, but even at that a cap lasts more than a year.

I also have an MSD distributor and box that I will be using with the sbc I am putting together right now, so I might find I like those as well.

  5. I've used a unilite in my last hemi and happy with it, but I can get an MSD for a much better price here in Aus. I just noticed that one is Magnetic pickup and the other is LED. I don't know much about electronics so I wondered what the difference was. I put a msd in another car recently for someone else and it seems ok so far. Just wondering.

I would say stay away from the Mallory LED like the pleg. I had one and after 3 LED replacements I said screw it and went with MSD. Mallory customer service was great to me but got tired of a bad product. Also, unless you haves spare LED with you, if it goes out you will be stranded on the side of the road.
