I know I'm not the 1st to do this, but here is a mock-up/prototype I am about to install in my 53 Ford. I didn't want to put new technology on the dash and ruin the look of the dash, so I got an AM/FM/MP3 receiver and installed it behind the original radio bezel. The unit is operated by remote control so I don't have to worry about controls on the dash. I am going to install some "mock" old knobs for the knob holes, but the unit will be concealed behind the original radio bezel and operated by remote. No need for any sort of CD player because I loaded up the unit with MP3 music I can cruise with, or just use the radio function. My speakers are encased in old school drive in movie window speakers that will sit on the speaker shelf in the back seat of my 53. I think it is going to work out just fine.. ;)

I would be interested in seeing what everyone else is using for audio entertainment in their cars..

That's pretty neat! What receiver did you use and does it have an input for external source?

I'm just using a redirad through the stock radio in my 59. Works nice and is better than nothing but the sound quality of the original system isn't at all good lol.

  4. Do yourself (and anyone else riding in your car) a favor and find a way to MOUNT your speakers to the package tray. Had a friend who nearly got killed by a spray gun that was loose in his back seat. Even in a mild crash/accident, things become airborne. I worked as a medic for 18 yrs. You'd never believe the things that happen in a crash.

my 59 came from the factory with no radio so it has the blocker plate. i figured on making a radio that can drop down from behind the dash. ideally just a front with remote amplifier.

Certainly. Things can become projectiles pretty quick. I plan to make a bracket that the hanger on the back of the speaker enclosure clips into so they will lock in place, or can be removed easily too.

The unit I used don't have a cD player either, but who needs it? I like it because it is much shorter & lighter due to not having a CD player in it, instead of CD's you can just stick a SDHC memory card full of more CD music (in MP3) than you could carry. Between that, and being an AM/FM receiver, have more tunes than I can ever listen to in one cruising. I only stuck a small 2gb card in it and already have about 20 albums of music on it and it's only about half full. So, I prefer it over a CD player.. ;)

here is the back. Crude, but in there solid, and secure. I just made a crude platform for it to sit on out of PVC panel, and some metal straps to support it, and it's supported good and secure.
