...........I got begifted me a '71 302 Ford Truck motor, but no trans. Will any C4 in the land bolt up to this motor, or did the trucks take a weird converter and bell housing? I'm guessin that any SBF valve covers, oil pan, and timing chain cover will bolt up to this block, no? gratzie, gratzie-
302 in a truck should be the same pattern as a late SBF (302-351). It however is different form the early 289. Remember that the bellhousing unbolts from C4s.
Finally, a question for me to share some decent knowledge on. The C4 bellhousing are in four varieties mainly. The early ones are a five bolt pattern and there is also a bell that bolts to a 330 and 385 series engine, i.e., 351M, 400, 429, 460. The most common bell housing is the six cylinder and the V8 six bolt. The V8 six bolt was used from 66 to the mid 80s. The six cylinder bell is easy to distinguish because it is noticeably smaller. C4 trannies came in two varieties, the pan fill and case fill. There is a difference in mid sixties valve bodies, but not imporatant enough to go into here. Trucks shouldn't have a strange converter. Only thing to really check on is the number of teeth on the input shaft for the proper fit to the torque converter and the number of teeth on the flywheel to the starter. Common varieties are a 26 spline input shaft and a 164 tooth flywheel. Hope this helps.
V8 Mustang 2's with the C4 had a smaller than normal bellhousing (but same bolt pattern) that required a dished oil pan to clear the closer mounted starting motor. Common sense says the converter and flexplate were of a smaller diameter as well. Fords can be confusing...
Isn't there a bell that fits 4 cyl and 60 V6s? 2.3 2.8 2.9 3.0? Or is it just a C5 bell that fits a C4?
there is a 2.3 c-4 bellhousing, they were in early pintos and muffstank 2's. by the way I got a 302 c-6 hanging around.
