Getting a feel for these 1938 Ford pickup rear fenders that JOYFLEA gave me. Thanks again Blue. I really only need to trim up the mounting flange to get these fenders bolted up. These fenders are designed to bolt to a pickup bed with paneled bed sides. My wrecker bed sides are flat. Then I just need to enlarge and re roll the lip opening for the larger tires.

I will trim the lip opening something like thus.

The rear fenders are a perfect look for the bed.

When you enlarge those fender openings I'd like to see how you roll the lip. I've got some 38 ford fenders that I may be radiusing at some time and have been looking for a how-to.
Keep up the great work - I love it.

  10. Looks like a circa 53-56 Ford panel van with a Boyertown or similar aftermarket body.

Thanks guys. The use of the 1938 Ford pickup rear fenders makes thing look right. It also make it easy to use the long, one piece 1938 Ford pickup running boards.

As far as enlarging the rear wheel lip openings, that is a must if I want to change a tire without removing the fender. With the dually rear axle, the rim has to slide 5" off the hub before the tire comes off. With the small 28" opening and a 31" tire, I could not remove the tire.

I'm not going to rework the wheel lip opening until October. I am saving this project for our International Metal Meet. One of the greatest metal shaper from Australia (Peter Tommasini) will be showing everyone how to open up and re roll the edge again. We will be using Hoosier tipping dies on my bead roller. I will post pictures of the process as soon as they're done.

Are you going to close up the front wheel openings when you open the rears? Love this thread. Subscribed!

  20. I have a similar problem when needing to remove the rear wheels of my Ford COE with the same rear fenders but rather then cut the fenders or enlarging the opening I just lift the truck up at the tow hitch, it then gives you enough clearance

Nothing worth mentioning. Just working on rust repairs.

Here the right side rocker, step, lower jamb, and wheel arch are rotted away.

And the new metal. I used galvanized 18ga. for this area. I still need to clean up the plug welds.

I also made some grab handles out of 5/8" stainless tubing.

Those rear fenders pulled the whole thing together. Can't wait to see with running boards. Amazing how well those rear wheels tuck in. Goid call on that rear end. With all the COEs coming on to the scene, the well-thought out ones really stand out.

Two thoughts on using galvanized steel... and I'm NOT an expert.

The galvanizing (I believe) is on the exterior only. Once you've removed that you've lost the protection it offered. Also, welding galvanized steel creates toxic fumes. Proceed with great caution!

Again, I may very well be wrong but this is my understanding. I just want to help if I can and I see using galvanized steel in a build to be a problem. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong!
