Hey men......Got a problem with my 56 buick special. Trouble shooting my dome light. In the beginning it stayed on all the time. Grounding the door switches didn't do anything. Long story short, I pulled the wires off of the two door switches, and jumpered those two wires together, to see if that done anything. When I did that, it blowed the dome light bulb, and shorted something out and the light will not work at all now. But the bigger problem is that I have a short now, all the time, pulling my battery down. Anyone have any idea. I don't have an electrical diagram of it. That might help and might not. thanks ronnie
Sorry guys. My short that I thought I had was because I accidently had the parking light on. So, that's not a problem any more. My problem now is that the dome light won't work at all. The ground lamp post in the lamp holder is not making contac now, where as it was constantly making contact and keeping the light on, until I jumped the two door switch wires together. It went from staying on all the time, to now, won't come on at all.
Each door switch grounds the dome light to make it light up. The other side of the dome light is wired to a fuse which is connected to 12 volts. My guess is that one of the door switches are stuck and always complete the circuit. Try taking one of the wires you disconnected and touch to a good ground. The dome light should light up. Then try touching the wire from other switch to good ground. Again it should light the dome lamp. If not, then maybe the fuse has blown. Get the lamp to work this way first, then start reconnecting the door switches wires back up till you find the switch that is stuck.
The headlight switch also turns on the dome light, if the knob is turned all the way (I believe) clockwise.
