    Hey guys,

Just noticed my tail lights do not get brighter when braking. The lights do illuminate when I turn the light on, and also flash when using turn signals. I checked the bulb to make sure both filaments were good, and they were, bought some spares and still have the same issue.

So... we know the bulbs good, and the wiring to the lights is good.

My question are, what does this leave? Just the brake light switch and its wiring? What is the easiest way to test the switch and wiring? When going to trace the wires, I lose them quickly as they head towards the steering column. Multi meter time? I would prefer not to strip the wires, but if it needs to be done...

Any help, or ideas, would be appreciated!

Pull the plug on the switch. Run a jumper between the two ports. If the lights light up, bad switch, if they dont, blown fuse or bad wiring.

The brake lights go thru the turnsignal ***embly the contacts break to allow the siginal to flash when you apply the brakes. Then they cancel when you turn the wheel. Check your flasher as well.

    Hey all,

Thanks for the responses. I ran a jumper between the in and the out and only the left side gets brighter.

What does this mean for the right side?

If my turn signals works fine (both sides flash when using it), wouldn't this mean my flasher is working?

So, it looks like I've got two issues: 1) with the brake light switch being faulty 2) with the right brake light not illuminating...

If the other side doesnt work, bad wire/ground, or bad filiment.

  6. Sorry to say but Flasher has nothing to do with brake lights. If you only had one bright bulb when crossing the switch wires check to be sure the signal want is in center position. You were loosing one contact through the signal switch at that time. Power to brake switch, brake switch to signal switch, splits and goes back to both tail bulbs. Signal and Brake use same filliment inside the bulb.

The Wizzard has worked his magic. That damn wand wasn't in the center; could have sworn I had checked it... Now to order a switch, and figure out how to get the damn thing off!

    Much appreciated guys!

with factory A/C on a B-body it isn't fun....hope your C-body has a little more room....should be a 7/16 screw holding on the brake pedal frame

The brake-light switch was done quite awhile ago actually. I am telling ya, working on old cars is like gymnastics! I couldn't get the pedal off to get the switch out easily. Luckily, NashRodMan is a better gymnast than I am. Now, I need to change gaskets for the ****** pan and the exhaust manifold.
