I have know Idea were this is ,and it looks to be in the late 20s maybe, but don't you just want to brake down and cry. What a world we live in.Enjoy. Chris
Sounds about right, and that looks to be a Manitowoc crane! That very well could be my grandpa loading those cars up with the crane. He was the test engineer (tested out all the new cranes before they were delivered) for Manitowoc cranes for something like 35 years back in the day. I may have to print off a copy of that picture and show it to him. I can't think of a better cause for all those cars to go to than WWII. It's unfortunate that the US government didn't use a big percentage of the s**** that was collected. S**** drives weren't just a way to get cheap steel, they were also a morale tool to help people back home feel like they were helping the war effort.
I've heard stories of them piling up tons of cars and setting fire to them to get the wood and interiors out of them for this reason.
Before air quality standards became regulated by law it was common practise to burn cars en m*** to recover the steel. I've got some photos around here from the 1930s of this. Where did you find this photo?
the pictures that are worst are the docks in california from 1934 to 39 they are loading japanese freighters full of old cars ,that they used to build their war machines with, hundreds of thousands of tons, AMERICA at the time was not recycling ,just using new steel, there was huge piles of MOdel t"s WISH I COULD FIND THE PICTURES AGAIN, never saw so many cars,
In 60-70 years will some future hot rodder find a similar picture of todays cars piled up in a junk yard and say the same thing?
I found these shots on another site that has pictures before WWII and during, on the home front. I think the idea was to burn everything out of the cars and be left with just the metal.
Bet you are correct. Looks like the tires have been stripped off, another thing that there was a premium on during WWII.
this photo of all the jeeps in the pile from EUROPE being cleaned up after ww2,alot of parts i could use sitting there,
yeah the price of 32's is crazy ,the last GPA jeep i saw went for 90 thousand, they made about 14 thousand of them, and all went to service, and to have a gpa is one fine collectible
Maybe I'm a sicko...but pictures like that make me smile! And I like rust...decomposition is cool! Were all going to die soon...why should these stupid cars out-live us?
Looks like me movin' the shop....even down to the bibs....sure wish I had a steam shovel....instead of a front load'r
The thing I think that ****s is the people in the US today have a different mindset then the people during WW 2. They turned in all metal, etc, kids lying about their age to join the fight, going on rations to help the war effort. today, the general population figures its not their problem, the Government will handle it. They wouldnt sacrifice their Latte coffee to help out. If we were invaded by some army or terrorists few citizens would do ****, theyd sit there and sue somebody because the gov didnt do enough. You would never see a bunch of new Toyotas or Suburbans on that pile.
Makes me think of all the s**** and raw materials now heading for China, and wonder if were heading down the same road...NOT to get all political here I just think its a shame that our US manufacturing capacity just keeps slipping away. I don't see ANY imports in THAT stack...
Considering how todays cars are built, I think that in 60-70 years those hot rodders will be applauding such pictures! regards, DJ
Aint no different than todays times. I see it everyday with 2000 model cars. Every since the goverment has been involved wrecking yards have slowly diminished. Take pictures now cause they will be something to talk about in 50 years
Amazing. To think that this is just one photo of things that happened. It is amazing just how many model As are still out there.
No. They'll be saying: Look at that pile of ****, glad they destroyed all that cheap and nasty garbage
