I am running a 4" drop model A axle with 41 spindles, and unsplit wishbone in an AV8. my question is should I try to heat and bend the stock steering arms or should I cut them off and buy a set ready for the 4" drop? thanks for the input
heat and bend is fine (and the price is right) moe ................................................................................... http://groups.msn.com/FordFlathead1932to1953/moesgarage.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=3280
Modify the original pieces. The aftermarket steering arms don't look right. Dave http://www.roadsters.com/
i bought some superbell dropped (not the deep ones) and I still had to heat and bend them......cost too much to send them back in the long run, i went with some different spindles and wound up heating and bending my stock ones.... no road time yet, though
thanks for the replies. Anyone running the same setup ( 4" drop, unsplit wishbone , Flathead) have pics or dimensions of how they bent the arms ? I was wondering if I bend the arms up, will I have clearance problems with the flathead? thanks for the help with these questions
If you bend up, give the arms a 180 twist so the tie rod nuts are on the bottom. Or get a reamer with the right taper and cut the holes half way from the top side (as done with some aftermarket Vega steering arms). Or fabricate some some hairpins.
Pete & Jakes / superbell has info on heating and bending steering arms in their catalog. if you need to put the tie rod on top retaper them with a reamer. the taper is 1-1/2" per foot
There was a post on here a while back where a HAMBr took an old tie-rod tapered end and welded it onto a longer handle. Then, he heated the steering arm of the spindle where the tapered part enters, cherry red. Next, he took a hammer and his homemade tool and tapered it from the other direction. My nut is on the bottom side of my wishbones. I didn't want my tie-rod inbetween my wishbones and my frame.....scarry stuff.....
use the superbell arms that are flat not bent and run the tierod above the wishbones. they bolt right on with no bending.when you bend stock arms they get shorter and you loose turning radius and they look funky. -danny
anyone have pics or other opinions as whether it's better to use the dropped arms and tie rod under the wishbone or bend arms up and go above the wishbone? thanks
