I'm picking up my "new" SBC from the machine shop today and I'm having some trouble deciding how to dress it. Chopolds helped me mix up a GREAT color paint.. what I need now is to figure out which alternator and p/s brackets to use. I like the alternator bracket on 67-72 Chevy trucks, but I've never seen a p/s bracket on one. Any ideas? I'm really not into anything fancy... I'd like to find something that's as clean and unobtrusive as possible. Any ideas? Thanks, Ed
I second the motion. Alan Grove brackets _look_ simple & straightforward as well, like a HAMBer would make 'em.
I'm gonna jump on the Alan Grove bandwagon too. I have used/sold a lot of his stuff. My experiece is it always works and I can always talk to Alan when I call. He is very knowledgable and helpful. The last set was a little slow shipping but he ran out of hardware or something out of his control.
I used brackets from Bill's Hot Rod Company. (They can be seen here , but they don't have a web site that I know of.) I got the black powder-coated ones instead of chrome, but I liked the way they fit/lined up better than Alan Grove ones. The BHRC ones come with stainless Allen head bolts, which ain't exactly trad, but most of them can be replaced with hex fasteners if it really bothers you. Here's the only pic I have handy of them on my car:
thanks for the replies. the allen grove passenger-side mid-mount alternator bracket looks perfect... exactly what I'm looking for. i'll check the dimensions when i get home to see if it'll work. and $40?!? that is pretty affordable! thanks! ed
Alan Grove brackets are bulky but work well, Bills brackets are good looking but have very little adjustment, like almost none.
Also, the '67-72 truck PS bracket does exist...there's one lost in my basement somewhere. This is a short-pump setup, and if I recall properly the pump tucks in low beside the engine, with a leg of some sort reaching back to some side bolt, either exhaust or mount somewhere. I bagged this whole setup at the junkyard because it was neater than any other short setup I'd seen.
The Bill's Hot Rod brackets are very nice and come assembled with the bolts right where they need to be. You can get them in bare steel as well. The Alan Grove ones only come in bare steel and in a box disassembled with all the bolts and spacers in a bag.
Bill's brackets are clean and well engineered and manufactured. They are what I prefer and use, fwiw. Nick
I've used "Bill's" on a few car's. I like 'em..no big complaints, but i will agree the adjustment range isn't to large. If i was in the market for aftermarket brackets again, i'd use them again..
I've had one of Bill's power steering brackets on mine for about 5 years. It's low and close to the block. Uses the same 3 bolt-holes as Slide's Alt bracket. Fit perfect on the first try. Travel on the adjustment is a bit short. I set mine about 1/3 of the way out with no belt, then cut the old belt to fit around the pulleys. The parts guy measured it for the new one. Kickass.
I use the 67-72 brackets myself too. Course I part out 67-72 trucks for extra coin though. www.67-72chevytrucks.com has a great parts board.
can't get the damn picture working, but this is (are) the PS bracket(s) I pulled off of a 74 Monte with a cast alternator bracket and short pump. I hope the link works.
[/img]another view. Planned on grinding smooth and painting gloss black like I did the alternator bracket. IMHO this set of brackets (the cast alternator and this power steering) are the simplest, and nicest looking made for a small block Chevrolet.
I AGREE WITH THE ALAN GROVE SUGGESTION, THE P/S BRACKET #FOR A S.B.C. WITH A SHORT WATER PUMP IS A #400L, THE ALT. BRACKET # FOR D.S. WOULD BE A 200L. THEY HAVE UNBELIEVABLE WELD QUALITY. COULD GO WRONG WITH THESE PARTS.
That's a 69-71 chevy truck bracket. I guarantee it. Never mind where you found it, when it came off the assembly line, it had a truck hood on top of it.
I have seen a 78 Corvette with a similar or the same alternator bracket, so I wasn't 100% sure about the PS bracket. I have since junkyarded another alternator bracket from a pickup, but it was missing the PS bracket. I think the passenger cars went to the long pump in 69 and the pickup trucks in 73. The original post mentioned the cast alternator bracket was from the pickups so I didn't repeat it, sorry if I mislead anyone. I helped my neighbor change motors and install the correct long pump and brackets, so he gave me these for my sister's 68 Camaro (69 motor), free is a very good price. I wanted something strong and simple that I could doll up with a little elbow grease and paint. Aftermarket brackets would probably do the job quite well, but by using these factory brackets, I could save her hard earned dollars for some other part of the build she would appreciate, and know these would look good and be reliable.
