I am bored with Street Rodder and I hate to say it Rod and Custom as well. What are the best old school and traditional hot rod rags on the market these days? I want the kind that get delivered where they dont keep the money. Any suggestions?

Yeah, those titles are phenomenal! But, by the term "rag", I'm thinking you are referring to magazines in the 5 buck range. So then you'd have to define what a "traditional rag" might be. Hopefully, your not confusing traditional, with "scene" mags. I'll take the "usual suspects" any day!

I know what you mean- we have tried REALLY hard to stay away from cars with Bitchin' firewalls, four bars and Torque Thrust IIs that claim to be "traditional"- good luck with 'Ol School Rodz and a few of the others because they don't seem to care as long as the pomp matches the cuffs.

i love TRJ, and wont stop readin it, but i can tell you that after the "subscription" is up that i won on a HAMB auction, i wont renew the sub...

last issue (the aniversary one) i waited a month an a half after everyone else had it in the mailbox, went out and bought a copy from the book seller... bitched and bitched 4 times in email to TRJ staff and finally got my copy from them in the mail.,.. now here it is almost two months after the next issue comes out and STILL aint got the issue after the 10th aniversary one... good thing Barnes an Noble has it cause i'd never get it from TRJ in the mail

  10. Now, NORMALLY I enjoy bustin' ol' Jim A's chops, but R&C has been pretty damn good lately. No magazine is perfect, but they have been improving over at R&C for a while. Damn, the smells of the Thanksgiving feast is making me mellow. I'll get back to picking at your scabs later, I promise, Jim A.

  11. TRJ is the best publication of the market....but.....their service is absolutely crap.....I wanna fill in some of the missing issues and they are running a deal where you can get 4 back issues and a sleeve for $50......3 times I`ve emailed them over the last month to find out if I can buy it from the UK and to find shipping cost and everytime the same....no reply......

I dont know who Jimmy White is but he probably is the only one that thinks your funny. I never claimed that my A was traditional only that I like to read traditional. What is traditional is that I do the wrenchin and paintin myself. Hope that helps. I guess that is a writers editorial twist. Perhaps my 55 would be traditional enough for you. It is uncut or molested in any way and time blasted back the way it rolled off the line BONE STOCK complete with a six banger and TUBE radio. Thats right I like to wait for it to heat up. I met Tim Bernsau on Americruise and he did a lifestyle shot and comments on my buddy and I a few years back. I did not say that I did not like R & C only that it has become boring, maybe a reinvention would help? Now Street Rodder is another story. EECH! I guess you know that the money goes in the same pot.
Dont get defensive.:) PS no cuffs or pomp in my life.

Thanks 60's style. You seem to be one CAT on here that knows your stuff and shows up without BS or EGO. Keep up the good work.

  16. Car Kulture Deluxe used to be Ok, but the new version has deteriorated. I mean, page after page of artists renderings? Nah! Too much kulture, not enough of what matters. Just my opinion, your mileage may vary.

I have edited this post after the editor of Rod and Kulture pointed out to me that I had confused his mag with CKD. I wish to publicly apologise for the mistake, guess I'll hafta start wearing a respirator when I'm spraying laquer!

Sorry, it's only NOT funny when some one calls you on it- OR when someome makes a blanket statement like "it's boring". No real way to come back from that one except to use a little irony that a guy with a disguised street rod is looking for something a little more HARDCORE, i.e. "traditional" to get him excited- OR in most cases just wants to get a few ME TOO'S going from the Peanut Gallery. I manage to find ALL the other titles- little and big and there is NO super answer to the ULTIMATE MAGAZINE!!!! Even the best ones don't entertain me PERSONALLY every month, but the difference is I wouldn't go on a website every month like 5 or 6 out of the 100s or thousands of readers do looking for a little sympathy because they weren't fully entertained that month.
I don't take it personally when 1 out of 120,000 that purchased the magazine is bored so please don't take it personally when I respond.

Hey Phil- I expect a little harsher critizism once the turkey wears off. ;)

I just picked up a copy of Speed & Chrome http://www.speednchrome.com and it's real quality.
Street Rodder doesn't hold my interest long, R&C is pretty good most times and Old Skool Rodz is ok. Lil mags like Wizz and Rolls & Pleats always has good trad stuff.

  24. Lets face it, we can take apart any magazine within their pages somewhere. Ya can't please everybody all the time, right ? Places I do business with send me catalogs so I don't need to buy Street Rodder as it's a glorified catalog.

If the applied logic is, "An enemy of my enemy, must be my friend", at least you'll smile once in awhile. Do my best to support the mags that fall into this area in hopes they will all get it sooner or later.

    Mags I read regularly;

Rod & Custom (the only mainstream rag)
    Rod & Kulture
Wizz (all pics, those guys need to learn to have text as well)
    CK DeLuxe
    The Rodders Journal
    Ol' Skool Rodz
    Kustoms Illustrated
Hop Up ( Annual and on-line)

    Johnnie.

  25. I grew up in SoCal in "the day". In my opinion Rod & Custom is closer to my roots than Speed & Chrome and the other "new tradition" magazines. From my perspective JimA and the rest of the Rod & Custom staff are doing a good job.

That said, I don't want you to infer that I am taking sides. And I'm not bashing one magazine or promoting another. This is a big hobby and there is room under the "traditional" tent for old school rodders like myself and new tradition rodders as well. And that goes for our magazines as well.

Thanks Bib- I'm lost when it comes to any of the "lifestyle" mags being "traditional". Most to me are far from it. To me car magazines were "traditionally" about cars and tech stories about cars- not Rockabilly music reviews and endless event coverage of Black Primer conventions.

We can get most of the US mags in shops here in NZ. I have checked them all out and they do vary in quality & content from issue to issue. In saying that I recently took a 2 year sub to Rod & Custom as it probably relates more to the type of cars I am into. The only downside was they wouldn't send back issues to NZ.

You could probably find a HAMBer to hook you up for a little more than the cost of postage if you put something in the want ads.

Jim A is a funny guy!!!! I like all the magazines but I am a moron and have the attention span of a gnat. Seriously take the good and the bad, there is always a little bit of info in every mag, if you dont like it dont buy it, just read it on the newstand.
