I have heard that Ford Granada"s had disc brakes on the rear. Anyone know what years and were they 8" or 9"? Fred
Some Granadas had disc 9 inch rears, Mercury Monarch too. I've found that most that do are decked out cars with 351W motors, power everything, etc. Most had 8 inch drum rears, some had 9 inch drum rears, and some have the shitty one with the cover on the back. I havent really noticed any particular year they were in, they made the cars from 75-80 i think. You have to just have a look.
Versailles are right, but they stopped making the calipers and rotors a long time ago, so all that are available are rebuilt ones, they are getting very pricey. Also, the emergency brakes are the pre-load, and they are non-floating, so they are kinda hard to set up. Explorers have 8.8s with floating disc brakes... ugly, but you get disc brakes. They make kits for the 9" that use floating calipers... There's also a guy on ebay who has a way to use mostly off the shelf Grand Marquis and Crown Vic parts on a 8" or 9" using his stuff. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4572455601&fromMakeTrack=true I just found his stuff, I don't know how or if it works.
I had to put in my two cents worth. To buy a kit to put disc on a ford 9 or 8 inch seems pretty expensive. The EBAY guy, there may be more than one, has the knowledge you need but won't share without buying a kit. here is the scoop. Late model FORD Crown Vic, about 91-95, Mercury Grand Marquis, about 91-95 and some Lincoln Town cars of the same era have what you need. The Ford 8 or 9 inch rear axle you start with needs to be one with the small bearing. On the 8 or 9 you will need to grind off part of the flange at the end of the axle housing so it fits into the late model backing plate. The late model flange and the old 8 or 9 inch have the same bolt pattern. You use the original axles in the 8 or 9, bolt together deal. You end up with disc brakes on a 8 or 9 inch using stock off the shelf parts. the caliper bracket/backing plate, is a bolt on, use the calipers and rotors off the late model also. You may check your wheels to see if they clear disc calipers though. the rear backing plates/caliper brackets are the same left or right. So are the calipers. You end up with an internal drum emergency brake. One E brake cable will point towards the back of the car and loop forward, The other E brake cable points toward the front already. Once you tear into one at the Pick-N-Pull it may make more sense. My set up which is still in a pile in the garage, cost about $65.00 for backing plates/caliper mounts with brake shoes , rotors, calipers and E brake cables. The hardest part to take off was the E brake cables. They are a pain. ENJOY! BOB
