Hot rod Axle questions

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Nixer, Nov 26, 2005.

  1. I got this model A project...

I have a front axle (anyone know what it is off of) split, but need to know what sized spring to look for.

I also have a NOS axle that I picked up that I am not sure what it is from.

    Measurements...
Black axle: spring perch to spring perch 36 inches
King pin to king pin - 50 1/4 inches
NOS axle: spring perch to spring perch 40 inches
king pin to king pin - 50 3/4 inches

And lastly, which is better to use and what do I do with the perches (do I grind off the funky stuff, or get new ones??

    Thanks,

    Tok

The black one is 28 to 31 and the other is 47 to 48

For the late one you would need a oddball spring and the bones (if split) would be close to the tires, possibly rubbing when you turn.

For the A axle you need a 28 to 34 spring.

Just torch or saw off that mechanical brake stuff and use em if the treads are still good.

I got a 48 on my A model build at the moment. Bones are split and yep, it does limit the turning circle a bit. I like the look of it though...and it's what I got at the right price and I'm on a tight budget.

  6. 296...thanks for the info...

skid...i think that I would like to do that..where do you recommend getting new perches??

Lullabelle, this is something I am trying because it will fit in my garage (barely)..and something that I can learn from.

how about a rear...i plan on 350-350 with this thing..I heard rears with a 53 inch flange right??

Nothing wrong with using the old perches. Just make sure the threads are straight and usable. After that just gring off the useless stuff and polish. Also make sure the shackle holes haven't been worn out of round and thin on the inside.

Like skid said, if you want to run the “street rod” style lower shock mounts. But if you want it the way they did it in “the day” use the ford parts.
    I put a tape on my 40 rear, 59 ½”

and dont pound the perches out with a hammer, i rounded off the threads on a set of T perches...and it sucked to rethread it. you need to press 'em out or work them out with a bar through the eye.
