Yup. It'll rust out your freeze plugs too. If one starts leaking just save yourself the headache and replace ALL of them because the rest will follow...
Down here I run aint freeze /coolant because it does freeze a few times a year and the coolant part makes a big difference . My rule of thumb is to change the anti freeze when I canged the belts and hoses beause it dose wear out about every 3 years or when something blows I good freind of mine that just p***ed was into OLD John Deere tractors (his newest was a 1957) I was @ his shop jawwing one day he had a 48 "D" in there and i noticed a pit**** on the updraft carb i'm like W T F? he went on to tell me they used to use alchohol for anti freeze ..and they would run the machine untill warmed up useally out to the feild then turn this pit**** and add alchohol to that 500 CID two cylinder beast and it would increase the over all horse power about 20 said it would use about 1.5 to 2 gallons a day damn he was a fat ugly kid ..i miss him too SR66 PS on this new **** the impellers are made of plastic and will come apart at high rpm's
One of the problems about this discussion is, there are a whole lot of different "Mixes", (different chemical base(s) with different properties) of anti-freeze. Each type of anti-freeze is formulated to serve a slightly different condition. Things like; extreme heat or cold in the region it's designed (or intended) to be used. Different alloys of metals being used in the construction of the engine and the cooling system. (aluminum and cast iron) Then in many cases; is a lubication component needed? Early flatheads were not as sensitive to having a lubrication component in the anti-freeze. This site will give you an idea of HOW MANY DIFFERENT KINDS of anti-freeze components there are. >>> http://www.lyondell.com/html/products/markets/automotive/antifreeze.shtml
I always ran straight water in my all-iron flatties, plus I added a capful of water-soluble oil for waterpump lubrication. I will do the same for my current project, but will mebbe add some anti-rust if I can find it.
I have a really good source for oem-quality replacement parts... cheap, too! My $29 waterpump is made by a company called GMB... Sound familiar? GMB, as in "Gay Michigan *****es?"
yea gmb's ****.......altho they do **** a little less for imports, but i would rather get lice then use one on a domestic. if you used one before that maybe why because they seem to last only a year or so. i shouldn't have said "aftermarket" because imc and worldpac sell oem parts that the dealers sell you (the dealers use them also). some parts even come in a dealer box with the dealer part# and name (toyota, honda, nissan...). i'm trying to remember here: toyota is koyo (was one of the parts man's) nissan is .......damn i can't remember.........but my point is the factory stuff has asian names.
