I am looking for a little backround and some info on some parts I came across. The intake is a 2x2 with the carbs set back so the generator can still be used in the stock location on the 59 A engine. This is good because thats the look I prefer. The heads are what I am interested in finding out about. I have never paid much attention to the Edmunds heads. I'm not sure I have even seen a pair. I have seen lots of Edmunds intakes and even OHV stuff forl Caddys. So what can I learn here on the HAMB about these super traditional parts I want to use on my next project. I also wouldn't mind finding out what kind of price range I'm looking at for the heads and intake. And how rare this stuff really is. Thanks and Happy Holidays Rudy.
This will further your education. However it's more Edmunds 101 and you need Edmunds 102 where they go into pricing and Edmunds 103 for head technology http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB1&Number=644405&Forum=All_Forums&Words=edmunds&Match=Entire%20Phrase&Searchpage=0&Limit=75&Old=1month&Main=639940&Search=true#Post644405
I have an edmunds intake that sounds like yours, and I have a set of edmunds custom heads that I'm going to put on my 47 coupe before the spring. You can see my intake before I polished it in the post linked above. Eddie Edmunds was the man behind it, there is info on him in "Hot Rod Pioneers" by Ed Almquist. Apparently he was quite a character, and didn't make his stuff in large amounts before changing designs, but quality suffered sometimes and designs weren't tested. He started out in Oregon in the 30's or 40s but was bought out by fenton in the late 50's.
Damn. i even learned somthing about him tonight. now where do i find the article?. was it a book or just an article and when?. I think there are 2 types of the edmunds 59ab type heads. some with lettering by the water neck, while others the lettering was near the center of the head. there seems to be early and late versions of just about everything he made from what i have seen. that flathead caddy intake on ebay is an early one with a lettering type i have never seen before. the early stuff said eddie edmunds, while the later was edmunds or edmunds custom in various combinations.sure would like to see someone do an updated story on him and the various combinations he used. i'll have to bug al drake about doing that.
Thanks a bunch guys. I hope this deal goes through. I have a little Flatty sitiing here crying for some vintage speed parts, and I think this Edmunds stuff will kick ass. I know once I start this project full on, I'm gonna get carried away. I can't wait to see what I do and how it comes out
"Hot Rod Pionneers" was a book by Ed Almquist (remember, Almquist catalogs?) a few years ago. It should still be available somewhere. The book has everyone who was who back in the early days. The part on Eddie was only a page long, but shed some light on him. Also interesting, all of his parts were polished when new! That is what I was trying to find out in my other post, what came when as far as his parts go. here's my heads and intake. Notice the script on the intake says Edmunds and the block letters on the heads say Edmunds custom. I'm not that picky, I was happy to have somewhat matching edmunds parts. I've seen nice heads ready to go sell for over $550 on epay, but I didn't pay close to that, just had to put a little work in mine. I've only seen one other car around me, an AV8, with edmunds goodies on it. he said he has big money in his heads having a lot of broken fins repaired.
I was also told that all the Edmunds came polished. And the parts I'm looking at are polished, and the guy said thats how they came. Cool. So while I'm at it I should go for the Edmunds Air cleaners as well. Anybody have a pic of them and did they have different styles.
Thats funny, your heads have the same Custom logo, but have large fins far apart, mine are deep and close together. Different year flatty though. There were a few different styles of edmunds air cleaners. I'm still trying to decide if I should get a pair, they are expensive and my intake came with new louvered ones so I'm going to run them for now. The two styles I've seen are ones that are oval shaped aluminum, with slots around the top, they just say edmunds on the top. They are repoped but over $100 each. The others are round and standard diameter, but about twice as high as a standard 4" filter, They have a wire mesh filter, the new ones just have a wire mesh screen to cover two real filters stacked on top of each other. They have the custom logo on top. Those are *only* about $70 a piece. So, you see why the ones I have look pretty good for now. Here is a pic of those ones: I think o'brien truckers who posted above sells these.
I've got a set of Edmunds heads. They're at the machine shop getting a couple new fins. Looks like we'll probably have to fly cut them for valve clearance when we get to that part. I also have the 2X2 setback high square intake for it. That one has Edmunds Custom script on it.
I've also got a set of heads just like the ones that Stud posted. And an intake for a 8ba. Heads have the "custom" logo and the intake just says Edmunds.
Interesting stuff guys, here's mine sat on my kitchen table at the moment.......what else is it for!!
I have been researching Eddy Edmunds for two years now and have accumulated quite a bit of information about him, But not enough to write a definative article about the man IF ANYONE OUT THERE HAS SOME INFO ABOUT THE GUY I WOULD APPRECIATE AN EMAIL.... pag4usa@pacbell.net
This was taken from www.vintagespeed.com Eddie Edmunds -----Edmunds Custom Eddie Edmunds made more performance equipment for more makes of cars than Weiand-Edelbrock-Offy-and Fenton combined. Eddie was an true Automotive enginneer supreme.Eddie was a native of Portland Oregon before moving to L.A. in search of a foundry to cast his alum parts. A lot of the early speed part dealers started in Portland area. Edmunds was the only performance parts maker approved by GM to be dealer installed on there cars. Each and every part Edmunds sold came show polished or so the catalogs say. The Edmunds logo can be found in many variations-Edmunds--Edmunds custom-- (Custom was sometimes spelled Kustom) Edmunds Racing--and Eddie Edmunds to name a few. Since his name was hand carved into the wood patterns by many differant pattern makers scattered all over the USA, finding any two alike is hard. I have never seen an Edmunds part without the hand carved script. Even the early block letters looked hand carved. We will be reproducing some of the more popular Edmunds intakes and other parts soon. Edmunds Custom was in business from--about 1936 (maybe earlier) thru about 1959 or '60 when it was sold to Fenton after Eddie died. Fenton dropped Edmunds from there line after a couple of years as the demand for inline six cyl. -carb setups and alum heads went away. Eddie loved dual intakes as a major part of his line consisted of dual intakes and finned alum heads. He did make triples for a lot of the early V-8's. Fenton made many of Edmunds products with the Fenton logo when they first bought the company. If you notice in our catalog we sell Y block Ford valve covers made by Edmunds and Fenton --same pattern differant logos, but both correct. These were made from original patterns. The early Fenton flathead intake was made in the Edmunds pattern with Fenton logo up front. I think Eddie Edmunds died in about 1958 or '59 but not much is known about the man. Els Lonns (of EELCO) once told me that Eddie liked the Booze and women--(sounds like an alright guy to me). Eddie made parts before the war as some of his early intakes were down right crude looking. One of our new shirts will sport the neat Edmunds logo below, showing the NASH engine he produced in the early 50's. Did you know he made finned alum exhaust manifold covers for the Caddy and Olds engines??---Anybody ever seen an original?? One of his very early parts was a water heated carb adapter that fit between the intake and the carb. These show up only on the crude pre war intakes. We will be reproducing this part soon. I have a 1952 catalog that states he was in business for over 25 years. That would mean as early as the mid 20,s he could have been involved in the auto profession. The pictures I have of Eddie in the early 50's, he looks about 40 but It has been said he died at 38 or 39 years old. If he did die that young ,he sure made a ton of stuff in the few years he had. I have a personal collection of Edmunds parts---I buy all Edmunds intakes --heads--valve covers, paperwork, catalogs or other interesting stuff. Collecting Edmunds Speed parts is a real task as you never seem to find them all. Cash to you or trade for any of our items. Email me---thanks. I know Edmunds built a new building at 2042 Stoner ave in `west L.A. -Ca. in 1952--Do any of you L.A. guys know if it is still there? Note---I would like to hear from anyone collecting edmunds parts or If you have any info on the company.
Vintage speed now has the rights to the edmunds name. Some of his stuff is repops of original, but some of it is new that they stuck the edmunds name on
Rudy, I've got a set of Edmunds heads on the '48 pickup I bought a couple of years ago . there is also a 2X2 intake w/94's on it on the engine. I've never looked real close at the parts 'cause I've never started on the project. I'm not sure if the intake is Edmunds or not, I'll take a look. and see what I've got. Frank
I just had a local Junkyard guy tell me about a 6 carb.....you read right....6carb Edmunds intake for a Flathead. Anyone seen or heard of this? Single barrel carbs, maybe?
No, he's a hotrodder. Old dude went nuts one day. I had my Fenton intake in for cleaning in the parts cooker when he saw it. Couldn't beleive a 'kid' had this thing. He knows his stuff and I told him to check on it for me. I'll know more later in the week.
All great info, thanks for sharing.. I'm after Edmunds heads for a Flathead if any one has any for sale.
edmunds made a bunch of intakes many for flathead 6's and ohv 6's also early caddy, olds 2x2 and 2x4 and early lincoln 2x2 2x4 and vavle covers tip if you got a edmunds intake to sell DON'T bead blast it they were smooth polished when built and blasting ruins stock appearance [also lowers re-sale price] john
Im running Edmunds heads and wide spaced dual carb intake on my 53. Since I always got WTF looks from the gold chainers Im not suprised that Charlie Price is in on the action. The gold chainers hate to be left out of things, dont they? Now Ive heard they are "comissioning" rat rods from some of the high bucks builders. They probably read the HAMB for inspiration anyway.
I have a "New old Stock" Edmunds early Caddy 331 2x4 intake, hate to dispell a myth but it has never been polished, the other one I have was used but had never been polished, is now though. Also have a pair of Edmunds finned alum valve covers for a Caddy, were polished when I got them. Squeak Bell (Kiwi Konnection, Bakersfield) has a set of Caddy exhaust covers on a Caddy in a roadster he has. Only set I've seen or heard of.
Pete, Yes I've got a lot of stuff I should get rid of. In the case of the D&S intake I'm planning on using it to put behind the tires of cars parked in the driveway. The wife took the piece of wood I was using and burned it in the fireplace. I don't want cars rolling out into traffic so you use what's available. Frank
Frank, don't you think one of your 427/435 intakes with the carbs AND aircleaner would be better suited for that
