Been gone for a little over a week. Logged in yesterday & I have red Xs everywhere on the board. Any "button" or "tag" has a red X in its place (I do have IE set up to show picture placeholders). I don't think any of my settings have changed & other boards I frequent don't have this symptom.

After reading 25 pages to get caught up (yeah, I'm addicted), I didn't see any announcements.

Any ideas? Setting changes I should try?

    TIA!

Could be your anti-virus program. Sometimes anti-popup programs interfere, or your (in my case last week) my A/V program got too big for my system. turned it off, problem went away!

Thanks for the tip, George. I disabled both my Norton AV & my Norton Internet Security & got everything back. So I tried one at a time to see which was blocking & it's my Internet Security. Not sure why, but it's set to automatically update, so who knows when it "updated" last...

This is Hanible_h20 using the old mans puter. I tried correcting his and this is what I found out from Norton. I tried their steps and as long as internet security is running the pictures and banners still won't work.

After running LiveUpdate, browser does not display pictures or banners

    Situation:
After running LiveUpdate, pictures and banners do not appear on Web pages.

    Solution:
To make the update take effect, it is best to restart Windows. This ensures that the entire application and firewall is re-initialized. At a minimum, disable and re-enable Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall.

Also, ensure that Ad Block is not enabled.

If the problem continues, refer to the Microsoft Knowledge Base document Web Accessories Functionality Turns Off Image Downloading (Q223050) at the following Web address: http://support.microsoft.com/directory/article.asp?ID=kb;en-us;Q223050

These problems are the reason I dumped Norton. I like Zone Alert internet security and Webroot Spysweeper. These two teamed up seem to prevent a lot of problems.

Anyone have ideas on fixing Norton Problems?

Yeah...Norton was my problem as well. Turned it off and it fixed it. I'm going to look into a different internet security program.

The weird thing is it's only The HAMB & Jockey Journal - other forums & websites I have no problems with...I wonder if it's vBulletin??

  10. Same deal with me. I'm only having trouble with the HAMB and the Jockey. I wonder what's up.

I have the same problem, so I did what you all stated and turned my Norton security off. Wham bam the icons were back. FYI... Prior to turning Norton off, I was able to view the HAMB perfectly through Mozilla and Mozilla Firefox browsers. It has to be something between Internet Explorer and Norton (both of which tend to be pieces of crap). I don't think it's VBulletin because I also post messages on CruiseCritic.com boards, who uses VBulletin, and haven't had any problems there.

I have Norton AV only, no Firewall and other shit from them. Even tried disabling script blocking. I do have Zone Alarm. I still have the Z's.

Any other rocket scientists out here?

Im not disabling nothing else until I know WTF is going on. Absolutely no problems anywhere else.

Rather than shutting off your Norton products and risking infection from other sites, you can go into the options of the programs and adjust individual sites. Just go snooping in the options until you find the tab that lets you configure individual websites, add the HAMB to it, make sure it's all set to not block nothin, and you'll be fine. Still protected, and no more X's.

I use Symantec (Norton's parent company) Corporate Antivirus and Firewall, was having the same problem until I edited the settings for the HAMB. So even the expensive stuff don't like the HAMB for some reason.

I am disappointed in the 2005 versions of Norton, but them being crap has kept money in my pocket (run small puter store.)

  17. i dunno guys....i dont even have Norton and no matter what i turn off...nuttin but x's....................................ok after much screwing around....i have ZoneAlarm
i had to turn the cookie control OFF...for everything....dont think so!
must be a different route to take...i hope
any geek speek would be appreciated:)

Last night I went through my Symantec / Norton Firewall options and set all connections to / from www.jalopyjournal.com to "Permit All". Still no luck in getting the icons to appear. I will try again tonight.

I looked at the code in a HAMB webpage versus a CruiseCritic webpage and found the code to be the same, but different. The HAMB may very well be the problem. So what has changed and why?

Now I don't mind the Red X's posted by HotrodBoy!!! :D

I have Norton Internet Security on this computer and Norton Systemworks on my laptop, and don't have any problem with either one - never had red x problem here.

I jacked with Norton firewall settings/options/configurations for a while last night. Couldn't get rid of the Red X's. Disable firewall - no red X's. I've got Norton Internet Security 2003, keep it updated and haven't had much problem other than every now and then it blocks email and I've gotta uninstall and reinstall to get email back.
So after no luck with the red X's, I uninstalled and reinstalled. Now I can't get internet or email with firewall enabled. I tried options/configurations and the shit just doesn't work. It was just Red X's on the HAMB, now I can't even write an email. Fuck Norton!
I'm gonna try this free firewall I found at download.com. The reviews are favorable. http://www.download.com/NetVeda-Safety-Net/3000-10435_4-10382920.html?tag=lst-0-3
If this one's not happening, maybe the firewall available to cox customers?

There was a Tech Q&A column in yesterdays paper where a guy was saying that Norton Firewall was blocking his Quicken. A was that there is a permissions area that you can list things you want, also said if that didn't help try someother firewall.

Mine's gone all to bollocks as well.
I use etrust antivirus and firewall.
If I right click on one of the red x's and select properties, all the details for the gif image (the image that is not showing) come up as "not available" Could it be that all these security systems block any image that does not have the full data available?
Any images that do show (thumbnails, avatars etc) have all data available.
In have noticed that when surfing for other sites, some of these also come up with red x's. I checked one and the same thing applies.

    Mart,

I'm on the road w/my laptop that only has Norton AV & not Internet Security & I've got no problems right now - other than the painfully slow dial-up....

When at home & mine is acting up, I also tried to check on the properties of the red Xs & got what appeared to be all the details. That was one of the first things I thought - perhaps Ryan moved the location & it was linked somehow that Norton didn't like - but all the details were there for the ones I had...

I even tried restoring my registry to an earlier date, but that didn't help, so I think it's something in the updated Norton.

And for whomever said they hadn't updated their Norton - it does it automatically & you may not even know...

In case it helps, here's what my screen looks like, after right clicking on the "reply with quote" button and selecting properties.

I'm having the exact same problem as you guys, this is frustrating. If I turn my Norton security off everything works fine.

  28. Mine is just the same, but my computer at work is fine.

Far to complicated for me to sort out, I'll just stick to working on rusty old tin while someone else tells me how to fix it:D

:) :) I don't know what just happened but my red Xs went away. I've been turning Norton off while I'm on HAMB and turning it on while on other sites. Right now Norton is ON and everything looks normal. :) :)

It still doesn't work for me. I have been turning my Norton Security off too to view the HAMB. The only thing is, that leaves my computer wide open for attack, which I don't like at all! I don't post a lot, but I like to come to the HAMB to read the boards. These damn red X's are very frustrating. Some thing has happened and whoever made the changes should fix them!!! OR, at least tell us what we can change exactly, step by step, on our computers to make everything appear correctly again!!! OR, if it's Norton, please let me know so I can get rid of the piece of crap software and get something better!!!
