The things I let my students talk me into!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Tinbender, Nov 29, 2005.

  1. In the last two weeks of the quarter, I let the students play around with most anything they want. Two of them really wanted to chop a top, so what the hell, I turned um loose on the stude. It's only metal after all. So far they're doing great.

I have never had a shop cl*** in my life. If they did stuff like that in our high school shop, maybe I would have had a little more interest.

I had friends in shop that made a lot of "dog whistles" though. I painted mine to look like a cigarette in art cl***. ha ha ha

I wished to **** you were my metals teacher...I just made a dustpan the other day haha It's gonna get pinstriped a lil later today or tomorrow

  12. ****, I've never made a dust pan. I wouldn't know where to begin.

    Anyway, here's an update.
They took 1&1/2" out, then about another 1/4" getting things evened up.
They started making up the sleeves to reinforce the B pilars, and are making the final adjustments for fit up. The A pilars were cut apart, and will be cut & reinstalled at the new angle.
I gotta say I'm proud of these guys. 22 weeks ago they had never done any body work, or welded. Today they can chop a top.

  13. BTW, if you look close at the shot from the rear, that is a chopped 35 ford!
Someone has to set these young guys straight!

    Tinbender,
You are an ***et to the future, having these kids actually build something that they can relate to instead of a dustpan, weapons, etc(well, some of the weapons are cool)! It is great to see that there are "Real Teachers" out there!!!
The only cool thing that I was "allowed" to build was some ladder traction bars, but couldn't bring the car in to install them!!!! akkk

Hell, I finished my first frame up rebuild my senior year. The shop teacher let me use the left to do a starter and everyone in the cl*** was in awe. Idiots.

    Its a '46.

Tinbender is one Hell of a guy. Letting students cut up your personal tin is awesome as it shows them trust & confidence in their abilities. Not alot of teachers can or will do that in a students lifetime. Keep us updated.

  20. Thanks for all the kind words guys, but it's ME that is the lucky one. Teaching has been the very best thing I could ever hope to do. I can't even begin to explain the satisfaction I get watching these guys learn and gain skills, and confidence.

Tinbender, what school do you teach at? i grew up in Spokane and went to Mead. I'm thinking of going back to school to become a teacher( preferbly a shop teacher). My wife currently works as a high school english teacher toughest job she has ever had but loves doing it. I've worked as a airplane mech for 8 years and am ready for something different. Your comments has kind of got me thinking. It's cool that theres teachers out there like you. Hats off to you.Gregg

I like the way you're dealing with the 'shield.
I'll have to remember that one.

Put the doors on and check the jamb gaps as they open and close before finish welding! (A word from experience...)

Im Vo-AG shop, me and a buddy figured out quickly that MORE Oxygen in an upside down coffee can will make it louder and launch it much higher than more Acetelyn. So I guess you could say we studied chimistry in shop.....hehe. Our last shop teacher (came my JR and SR year) was a jerk-off and freaked out anytime we tried to do anyhing, so I mostly just slept at my desk to keep out of trouble and get an A.

How awesome! I would have loved to done something like that in shop. I got too good at sanding, and spent most of my time preping cars for paint. I was allowed to cut into a donated 80's S-10 blazer, I was going to chop it. I started removing the interior panels, and taking measurements. Then I came in one day, and it was gone.. the lease on it was over, the mechanic's shop took it, and cut it up into little pieces. Still haven't done a chop, 15 years later!

    Cool,
A couple of real young guys who are ruined for life.....they'll neve have enough money, time or shop space from now on. Way to go....

By the time they are our ages they'll be putting 20 batteries under the hood and covering electric motors in faux flathead engine boxes though.....
