need some advice/ideas for a '40 coupe

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by PBR Allstar, Nov 30, 2005.

  1. Okay,
This is my Dad's car that we're finally getting around to doing something with, it's been in storage for 20+ years, it's an arrow straight 1940 pontiac coupe with absolutely NO rust at all. it was originally put on a '78 caddy frame and disc brake rear end, the frame graft is okay, could have been done better, but mostly what I'm puzzled about is what to do with the car visually , the roof line of the car (in my opinion) has a bit too much bulge above the quarter window leading down the back glass and into the trunk line, I think the car would look pretty trick with a slight chop and laying down the back glass, especailly with the raked B pillar the car has stock. Anyway, anyone have some idea's? I think this car has great potential as a more traditional custom. Tell me what ya think better yet, anyone wanna help with a photochop?

I see a gasser in its future....

    or a tail dragger

  5. speedaddict, Definitely going the dragger route, don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with gasser, but I wouldn't go that direction unless I had the big inch hemi to go with it. I'm definitely interested in the chop on your 39 seeing as it's a very similar car.

3 1/2 " chop done by previous owner. You're right, it is very similar.

Glad you like it.Seing it a day later makes me think the top even needs a little bit more chop but it was a rough pic anyway.Regarding the wheel/tire combo,I would go with stock steel wheels and wide whitewall biasply's.Firestone 6.70 with 3 1/4" whitewall,BF Goodrich 6.70 with 3 5/8" whitewall or 6.70 Good Year with 4 1/8" or 4 1/4" ( not sure in the moment) whitewall, depending on what look you are after. As far as hubcaps,Cad Sombreros do look really fine on those cars, single bar Hollywood flippers would be cool too.Just stay with the very early look and you will have a gorgeous car.

Here are some pics of Rick Dore's '40 Pontiac. The Carson top looks cool too.I don't really like Dore's interiors and engine compartments since they are more contemporary than traditional so let's just look at the car itself...

Please build some bumper guard tail-lights for your Pontiac too.Just beautiful...there's a lot more info and pics of the car on Dore's website...

any color ideas? I'm thinking something neutral, maybe plain jane machinery grey.

  12. Frenz, I was thinking Old's Fiesta caps since I have a set (not the tiawanises ones, I have a new set of the stianless ones. I have looked at Rick Dore's car an awfull lot and the couple things that I want to keep on the exterior are the beltline trim, and I want a front bumper, I probably wont use the stock pontiac bumper, more like a single blade type bumper off a chevy. I do like your chop though, it mellows out that bulbous effect of the area above the rear window and it accentuates the nice shape of the raked B pillar.

Fiesta caps are nice but not on this type of car.Try to build a timeless period correct Custom. Those Olds caps are early to mid fifties.I would set the "build date" to somewhere between 1940 and 1950 and would work with parts only available at that time.Fiestas wouldn't be period correct but you can put on whatever you like of course. It's your car but since you asked...

Here's a pic of the Fisher Ford with single bar flippers and 6.70 Firestones with 3 1/4" whitewall.Beautiful !

Also nice about the pic is the Weesner Ford reflecting in the arrow straight '36 Ford body covered with gorgeous black paint...

  14. Yeah, the fiesta's were for my '50 that I never got around to using, there's a lot to do anyway before I get to the stage picking a wheelcover.

That car would look awsome with a nice chop, layed down in the back and made into a 3 window.
