Is there a difference in cam design on a 1986 carburated 305 with HEI vs. a 1991 throttle body injected 305 with small hat distributor and external coil? I was told that the distributor gear may be a different size!? The reason I ask this is, I am wondering what problems I will encounter while puting the 1991 fuel injection and all related parts onto the 1986 engine. I plan on swaping intake, distributor, all sensors, pumps and brackets! Any help I get will be great, thanks!
I know we are oldschool, but some one has to know the answer to this! Dont need to bite off more than I can chew if I dont have too!
Im gonna guess here that the only thing different is the small body dizzy the gear is prolly the same but ive been wrong before (once) Dave
I just need to be sure, cuz if the drive geras are different then its time for a cam swap and the engine owner wont have that! Any one else have a clue, Thanks guys and gals!
why dont you change the gear on the dist.? I have both of motors you speak of and just had the 91 injected motor apart.. i didnt see any thing diffrent but didnt take a close look.
another problem your going to have though is the 91 has a knock sensor and the 86 should have no prvisions for that. and since your doing away with that why dont you just use the hei its easier to wire in and works fine.
You're gonna have to swap heads too, or alter the intake bolt holes to fit. The angle changed sometime around 87. Silicone is your friend. Jay
Nope! Talked to the owner last night and he said if it was gonna be a big deal then he would look for somthin else! This is why I decided to ask first, rather than fin out the hard way!
I wanted to use all of the fuel injucted motors sensors and plugs since it is going back into the 91 car ony with the 86 long block! Maybe this is getting deep! I didnt think intake and head angle changed until the "vortec" version came into play!?
A little tech help from your friendly hotrodders auction admin. The gears are the same even if it has a roller cam. only the aftermarket rollers take a special bronze gear. The intake changes angles on the center two bolts {four actually , two on each side, egr crossover area}. You can drill the intake to fit {or use a chainsaw file} and silicone it or buy a cheap kit to do it the right way with no leaks. The vortec heads will fit an older block but the intakes are very different as the intake has lost the egr crossover and the bolts. They8 that are left around each water port are verticle like a Ford 302/5.0. They also have a raised runner. any other sbc questions: support@hotroddersauctions.com
sweet a good clear answer, thanks for the help! Guess I will talk to the owner about it and see what he wants to do!
somewhere in those years there is a difference in the diameter of the distributor where it goes into the intake.....a buddy had a 91 olds wagon with a 305 that was odd in this manner....plus you have the different intake bolt deal .....brandon
thats what he thought too ....haha check that distributor before you install the motor.....as a distributor change in the car is VERY interesting........like changing one in a van with out removing the engine cover on the inside.....brandon
