I am using my stock cowl gas tank in my 30 coupe, but changing the dash so the fuel level guage will be covered. My dash for it has a guage. Is there any way to to get a sensor in the tank so it is hidden and I can use the electric guage in my dash?

    Thanks ahead for any ideas.

No gauge needed! Just leave the cap off when the fuel quits bouncing out it's time to put more in :)

A stick also works really good Just ask any old MG,VW guy!

If you wanna be ''Traditional'' use a yard stick 1. They are hard to loose in the car and 2. They have marks on em!!! AND unlike a short stick you'll never loose it by droping it in the tank.

I'm sure Dr J will post further instructions..........

I'm off to fight for Xmas presents.......first time in weeks I've felt good enough to deal with others in a public place

why not a sight gl*** tube in the dash?

if it is just for local driving I would just top it off everytime I take it out (and carry a jerry can)

you could prob put a genaric sender in the side of the tank but not sure if it will be leak prone.

Site tube is a good idea. The stick would be a solution also.

I plan on using the car everyday and drive during the day for work. So it would be nice to have a guage.

Is there anything that can be placed at the filler neck and still be able to fill it with gas?

I think it was the J-3 Piper Cub that had a cork float with a wire sticking out of it. When the tank was full, the wire would stick up in the pilots line of sight, if the gas was low the wire would be less visable. You could paint the lower part of the wire green, the middle yellow and just before it went out of sight paint it red. Then again maybe it was the 1930 Stinson that had the wire gauge.........

Serriously though, If anyone can figure out what sending unit would go into the hole where the stock gauge goes, I'd like to know.

How about a lawn mower gas cap? some of them have a cork float type guage built right in.

  8. I think your out of luck. I started to post a thread telling how you could remove the stock filler neck, weld in a bung for a fuel sending unit, then install a fake cap to hide the screws in the sender unit.---Then I realized that you need the filler cap functional to get gas into the damn thing. Try your local hydraulic parts warehouse---they will have gl*** sight tubes.

On 2 of my model A's I just punched about a 2 inch hole in the dash where the stock A gauge is and used the stock gauge. You could also add a tube to the back of the dash and light the tube to help see the gauge a night. **** i just carried a small flashlight.

  10. I'd go with the lawn mower cap.The one on my mower has a gauge built in to the top of the cap.The only down side is you have to get out of the car to read it.I'm sure it could be easily recalibrated to work with your tank.

I took a Stewart Warner fuel sender and truned the o.d. down to the size of the gl*** in the stock unit. I replaced the gl*** with the unit with new gaskets. Hooked it up to the gauge and it worked great. You should be able to use any sender/gauge combo as long as you can take the sender apart to machine it smaller.

  15. That's too cool. I must get one to fit to in the end of the tank on my modified (see below).

  16. AV8Paul, you are right-on. Get one at UNIVAIR. Part Number U71041-000 , take the Model A cap and modify it to accomodate the gauge. Toot-sweet! Email them at info@univair.com , they're good people.
