IBM T series. I have a T-41. They're expensive but better than any desktop or other laptop you can buy.

    Mac. Buy a Mac.

Unless you want your wife to become a software debugging expert, or to call you constantly with her computer problems.

Don't let the salespeople get you caught up in the numbers game. Even the low-end iBook performs better than 90% of anyone's needs.

If she wants to do serious graphics work, or other intense engineering, get a powerbook.

depends on how often she'll be away from a wall outlet. If she'll need to be on a battery often, i'd suggest an intel centrino chip, they extend out the battery life in exchange for a slower processor. Not a big deal unless she wants to sit at the park, and edit video or play the newest computer games. Second option, get any type of laptop, and a couple of extra batteries.

One other thing, laptops are expensive to fix. Not the programs, or operating system, but the physical unit itself. Everything is integrated... if something happens to the video card part of the motherboard, you replace the whole board, etc. Keyboards alone usually run between $75-200. The display, if you can find one, is $200-500. I'd ask yourself, is your wife one to lose things, or drop things often? If so, i'd get the cheap $500-700 Dell, and replace it when it dies. I've had to tell several people that their 2yr old laptop was junked, and to go buy a new one. At our shop, we usually turn away laptops that have broken parts, or hardware... by the time they pay us to fix it, they could have bought a new one.

Laptops are great, they are the biggest seller this past year for the manufacturers, because they are so handy to have around, and have really came down in price.

  7. I have Dells and Macs at work (ibooks and Powerbooks) the ibooks cause the least amount of problems. but if you get her a mac, she's gonna hafta learn how to get along with the Windows people. A program called "MacLan" will make life easier.

    Mojo,
Quick question. From what you wrote, is it a bad idea to buy a used laptop that is a couple of years old? Also, who has one of the cheaper ones for just internet surfing and checking email?

    Thanks,

Oh yea, if you get a laptop. This is a good site to check "deals".

Get a budget notebook if it is just for web surfing and you don't want to spend much. Just keep a close eye on anything you download or emails you open.

Otherwise, get yourself a mac. Not a powerbook, overkill for ya. The ibook is hands down the best deal for a notebook around. And once you get used to mac, it is the best os you will ever use. Makes windows seem like a chimp made it...

Brewsir....give me a call bro, I will help you out. I think you forgot Im an IT ****.

    :D:D

  12. Agreed.
If you get stuck there's plenty of Mac users on here to help you out.
You'll be fine with an iBook - I'm writing this on my old Pismo powerbook, which has been a bomb proof workhorse, original battery still holds a full charge, keyboards a pleasure, all that kinda think is the difference the shop won't tell you. And a base iBook will run rings round this.

Right now? Second hand iBook. Good resale value if you change your mind.

BUT - if you're buying new, I'd hold off till early next year. Christmas time is normally the firesale before the new stuff comes out mid-Jan. And there's a rumour the new Intel chipped iBook will be announced at Macworld...

I bought a Toshiba Satellite notebook one year ago last week, and it is outstanding. I paid 600 for it, upgraded the ram to 512, and kept everything in it pretty basic. 40 gig HD, CD writer DVD reader, Celeron M, Windows XP home. Its been good to me, I bought a desktop this year for less then 200 WITH a monitor and have no use for the laptop anymore. Laptop looks to be brand new, have original packaging and hardware packets un opened if interested PM me:eek: Its never been outside, no nicks dings or scratches, monitor is flawless. Lemme know

IBM no longer makes laptops. They sold that division to a Chinese company named Lenovo. IBM now sells the Lenovo laptop.

    Perhaps that's a Dell model.
Oh - and IBM sold of their desktop/laptop business to the Chinese (Lenovo) a while ago.

I'd agree to get a Mac, but if you need Windows, try a Toshiba. My work laptop is a Tecra M2 and it's a tank. I've dropped it, spilled things on it, scratched it, etc and it just won't break. I've seen iBooks go through the same without any problems, but they're too pretty to mess up.

Haha the silly newbie is getting all defensive, maybe if he did an intro
or posted something remotely helpful instead of being an internet tough guy he wouldn't come off as such an ***.....

But I do have some help for the subject. I 've been in the IT industry for the last 10 years or so. I prefer Macs and highly recommend them. If you have an Apple store local they have iBooks on refresh (open box etc.) that'll save you a bit. If you feel the need to get a Windows laptop look at the IBM (it's now a rebranded Lenova as has been discussed) and the Toshiba. P*** on the Dell and Sony's right now. Don't get anything with XP Home, get the full version of XP Pro. It makes a big difference. The Intel Centrino's will get you better battery life as has also been mentioned....

If you need anymore help feel free to PM me. I support a variety of users with everything from Apples to Sun to Intel.

My first experiences with a laptop was a couple of months ago when my boss lent me his personal Dell to take on my trip. I fell in love. Was easy to use and had all the bells and whistles including built in wireless. I have since called Dell and gotten a quote with everything including shipping for just under $500 dollars. I'll be ordering after Christmas and hoping the prices drop just a bit more. Check their website when you get a chance.

Of course since it was the only one I have experience with I have nothing to compare it to. I guess I really like the price and I have been thrilled with my Dell desktop the last few years.

    Denise,
Check the link above for great deals on Dells. They tell you how to get the best deal with all of the promo codes. A buddy of mine told me about the site a couple of years ago.

I wouldn't buy used. Laptops have came a long ways in the last couple years. Any laptop will work for web surfing, no problem. We usually recommend Toshiba's, they are good boxes, but a little pricey. We like Dell's, they are cheap, but generally good. If you find a model that looks good, look it up on Google and see what people's opinions are on them. I personally have little experence with ibooks, I just know imacs are one of the biggest pains in the *** to take apart!
