This is hardly a traditional hot rod, but this level of performance would have to give any true hot rodder a major woody: The December 05 issue of Road & Track magazine has a test of a Ruf Rt 12. Alois Ruf is a Carroll Shelby kinda guy who builds factory authorized hot rod Porsches, and this is the latest version of his Qship. This is basically a stock looking 911 coupe, lowered some with big wheels, but no outrageous wings or anything. This is a street legal, street driven car. Check out these numbers: 650 BHP 642 ft/lbs torque 0-60: 3.2 seconds 1/4 mile: 133.9 @ 11.0 top speed: 217.1 MPH (not KPH) ...and you can buy one, only cost you $287,000. But, hey, you could make it back street racing.
There's just one problem with German cars- it's hard to get excited about anything, that comes from the country that managed to lose 2 World Wars within 30 years.
I always said I'd never own a furrin car but I gotta chance to buy this 944 water pumper.... Grimlock striped it for me and I've had a lotta fun with it as my winter beater...runs uncommonly strong for a 2.5 litre 4 banger!
I love old hot rods & customs, but I also really love Porsches. They may not be traditional or whatever, but when it comes to hauling major ass, it's hard to beat a well tuned 911. I got my old 02 Carrera 4 up over 150 on several occasions (one time with the top down!), and it handled it like it was nothing. I swear the damned thing would drift a 90 degree turn at 50mph, and with AWD & 315 35's on the back & 295 35's on the front, I could dump the clutch at 6 grand and the fucking thing would fly out of the hole like it had been rear-ended by a truck doing 90. I beat the hell out of that car for a year and it never had the slightest mechanical problem. God I miss that car. The turbos can be modded pretty easily to make more than 600 horses. A friend of mine in Tampa who has a high end mod shop has done a few in the 600hp range, and said they accelerated so hard they made him sick to his stomach. My next Porsche will be a modded 911 turbo.
RUF 911's rock..... My old Boss back in the UK had an early one for a while before he got his 911 Turbo...I got to ride alongside him in it a coupla times, that thing was F A S T!
I love porsche's myself.. the're the ony foriegn car i'd even consider. I had an older 911sc. 3.0 liter euro-spec car..had bigger brake's with braided stainless line's, different cam's, exhaust, aluminum flywheel..and a few other small thing's. I bought it with a lot of this stuff done..i think someone was setting ot up for autocross..it even had a different shifter and wheel, and 180 speedo.. It was the fastest car i've ever owned..not the quickest, but fastest. The thing would hit just over a hundred in 3rd and it was a 5 speed. Biggest problem was the damn mechanical injection..but when it was right it was fun as hell! I've driven a few, including a '02 C4 a customer had..that thing was insane fast.. Someday i wouldn't mind finding another.. The're like a go kart with a sbc for the street.
But you have to remember. They are a country roughly the size of Texas. They put a good hurting on alot of countries.
Ruf CTR1 YellowBird around the Nurburgring If you haven't seen it this is Stefan Rosers lap of the Nurburgring in the late 1980's 460bhp rear wheel drive Ruf 911. No electronic aides just a bit of oversteer here, a bit of driver skill there, a whiff of opposite lock just over there, all with some trees and bridges and stuff to make sure Stefan did not fall asleep on what looks like a hot sunny day in Germany Anyhow, less of the talk, take it away Mr Roser.... http://www.aocb77.dsl.pipex.com/RUF.wmv www.r-a-c-e-r-s.net/Videoer/469hk Porsche 2.wmv
There are heaps of 911 GT3's here in Melbourne Australia...I've seen a few seriously floor it...WOW....bye bye. In my work basement there is about $500,000 AUD of porsche (3 All black cars)...sometimes I like my bosses.. =] Maybe this is OT but...i wouldn't say NO
Flexi-- around here it's rare to see them above $5 grand. My uncle has has 4 or 5 and never paid more than that. He bought one ( I think it was an 86') that he bought in like 1990 for only $900 cause noone could figure out why it ran so rough. Turns out they have some kinda of balamce shaft or rotating counterbalances or something that were way off. Obviously I don't know a lot about it, but whatever it was he had it fixed in a day and it purred. It's so hard to believe it's only a 4 cyl when you drive it, so much fun!
I had the opportunity to drive my buddys '05 Vette the other day.Nice long cruise. Most impressive car Ive ever driven. If ya switch off the rear traction control,ya got ALL ya want.
I'm betting his lap time wasn't all that spectacular. Homeboy was drifting apexs like it was a sport... Oh wait, I guess it is a sport now...
I was thinking the same thing but then again I'VE never DRIVEN around the FUCKING NURBURGRING... in a F1 RACE!!!! So I'll reserve the comments for the boss-man... But what he's doing to that wheel is obscene... ***Oh yeah I forgot to add that my bosses are weekend Porsche Warriors with race tuned Turbos. But I work around a bunch of yahoos... Hapiness is watching a guy trying to show off in a brand new $250K Ferrari forget when he's supposed to to shift and drive about 3/4 of a mile with the REV-LIMITER barking at him. Money can't buy brains.***
Well, if it were a one dimensional acceleration only drag-type car, then no, it wouldn't be all that impressive (not that 11 seconds flat isn't blistering fast, because it is). But considering the fact that this is a car that does EVERYTHING (handling, braking, top speed, etc.) extremely well, I think it's very impressive. Most cars that seriously get down in the 1/4 don't handle worth a shit. And it's probably daily drivable. Not a lot of 11 second flat cars can claim that. I've driven quite a few really fast cars in my day, and the main reason I prefer the 911 is the confidence they inspire driving them. I've driven some vettes that were every bit as fast as my C4, but I wasn't nearly as comfy pushing them to the limit. 911's make you feel like you can do anything. I like a sketchy hot rod that scares me to death, but supercars that make you feel like anything is possible are a hell of a lot of fun too. And that's what it's all about for me - fun. There are alot of guys on this board that will shit on Porsches and say they're overpriced yuppie toys, but I doubt they've ever thrown one into a turn at 100+ while their buddy was in the passenger seat screaming like a little girl. I have, and it fucking rocks. One of my rockabilly buddies used to give me shit for owning one. Then I took him for a ride, and well, let's just say it never came up again. Oh, one more thing, your pan kicks ass.
no, it just proves some people like to take turns. not all Porsches are expensive and not everyone loves traditional cars.
1. An 11 sec quarter is really fast for any car. Mentioning otherwise means you haven't been that fast. 2. 911s are confidence inspiring? That scares the shit out of me... being they are famous for their snap oversteer...
