This is just a day of rememberence. If you want to start a "lets rip on the japs" post, its a free country. The people we are remembering died for that freedom!!!!!!! This isnt the place to do it.
Most of us enjoy the early years of cars and traditions and life. WWII played a big part in all of that. I believe most of us just want to remember the people that lost their lives. On both sides..... Theres nothing wonderful about war. Theres no glory in death. Youre still dead. The least we can do is remember those people.

Its a shame that some people take a decent, well meant thread and turn it into a rant against something.

    Best of luck.

BTW, I've met lots of veterans over the years. Shaking the hand of one of the survivor/volunteers while waiting in line almost choked me up.

  6. Chad, that statement almost got me choked up.

    Never forget.

I try to remember our vets every day. I wear three vials of sand around my neck..one is from the beach at Iwo Jima, one is from the beach at Normandy and one is from the beach at Kaneohe Bay HI. If the anniversery of an important day in U.S. history brings up feelings of hate instead of the self sacrafice our grandparents...thats too bad and dissapointing.

My grandfather didn't make the decision to go to war...but he fought for this country and he was glad to do it. You can make this about whether its right to go to war...or about politics...or you can just appreciate that fact that some folks sacraficed for what they believed in.

I wish revisionist "historians" actually spent time in the library.

Thank you all veterans, we remember this day at our house every year. My father-in-law and my dad both served.

Arizona has several pieces of the USS Arizona. We have one of the anchors and the flagstaff at the East end of the Capitol Mall. A very wonderful display is in the old Capitol building, including a piece of the hull and the ship's sterling silver banquet service. The ship's bell is at the University of Arizona in Tucson at the Student Union Memorial building. This new building has the bell hanging so it can be seen and rung during the annual Memorial service. There is also a display of items from the ship during its life, with pictures and models of the ship. Also there is a very nice fountain with pieces of the anchor chain and hull plates. This fountain is in the area where they have hung the bronze plaques that list the students who were lost in the four wars of the last century, WWI, WWII, Korea and Viet Nam. Another memorial sculpture at the Union building has a dog tag for every one of the men who died on board the USS Arizona on that infamous day. Never forget, and never forget September 11, 2001. We must always fight for liberty against those who would steal it from us.

Thanks El Caballo for remembering our past history and honoring those who stepped up for our country. I feel as if it is a better world because of what they did.
I keep remembering somebody saying something like "those who forget history are doomed to repeat it", unfortunately I feel as some of the younger folks will fall into this catagory.
A special thanks to all the WW2 Vets out there!:)

Here are pics of my visit with my Dad to the Memorial.

The Torpedo was dug out of the harbor.

The ship band took 2nd place in a battle of the bands the night before. They all died and were given the trophy posthumously.

The submarine we are at is the Bowfin (Pearl Harbor Avenger). It was launched on the 1 year anniversary and sank 45 ships in 9 combat tours.

Thank you to the brave souls who lost their lives on this day so many years ago.

Its not about politics, or racism- its about honoring the men & women who died because they chose to serve their country. Nothing more, nothing less.

Much like it's important for us young fellas to listen to the older guys when we have questions about traditional rods and kustoms and how it was done "back in the day", we need to remember the men who lived that day and never forget the sacrifice they made and the bravery they exhibited. It's an unfortuante fact of life that everyday we have less of these folks around, it's important to make sure that we know where our freedom to choose SBC or Flatty comes from...these men put a face on it.

Cut the political bullshit before this well intentioned thread gets locked. "slap a jap day" just sent us back 60 years and shows nothing but ignorance and a complete misunderstanding of what this day is all about.

    Get over it!

I prefer to remember December 7th 1992, the day Wife started working for HONDA R & D and she's going to get another one of those really healthy raises HONDA she gets every year, today...

How about we hate the BRITISH for invading and actually burning down the WHITE HOUSE and New Orleans in 1812-1814? (Not really, I'm 1/2 British, 1/2 Texan, with ancestors from New Orleans, but just as stupid.)

Yes, as long as this stupid shit comes up every year this will be my response to it.[/QUOTE]

While we're at it, let's forget the "Death March" that the Japs forced on the British and Americans. And forget the leisurly life of the prison camps?
How about the "Rape of Nanking"?
No, I think you are the stupid one here. How about you going to Iraq and telling some Marine that just saw his buddy blown in half by a roadside bomb, that it was "stupid" for them to do that.

While I was stationed at Submarine Base Pearl Harbor, they filmed Tora Tora Tora. It was really strange, after visiting the memorial, to have Zeros, Kates, Bettys, ect., flying over our shop at 150 ft, with fake bombs hanging on the belly and wings. We watched from the sub docks as they blew up barge mounted replicas of the battleships, and the planes dropped right on the water to launch torpedos.

Some of the old salts were visibly upset, as many were stationed at Pearl on December 7, '41. It brought back the horror they experienced that day - the funny thing was, they didn't remember the heroism of their actions - only other's actions. I've known, and served, with a lot of WWII vets, and they are indeed special.

The picture is the WWII Submarine Memorial at Subase Pearl, and the submarine I qualified on - built at the end of the war - USS Odax SS484.

I'm gonna let this thread ride a bit longer as our VETS should be recognized. That said, I will end up closing it as some of our members refuse to respect our "no politics" rule. Dissapointing for sure, but that is not what this thread is about.

This thread is about Americans that gave thier lives so that we could have ours.

  21. I enlisted this day 30 years ago and didn't realize it was the day Pearl was attacked.

Later when I was heading home from the swearing in and I heard a rebroadcast of Roosevelts speech.

I had 8 uncles and 2 aunts in the service at that time... God Bless their diligence and sacrifices...!

  22. How about "slap a racist dumbass day"?

There is nothing remotely funny about that statement. We have Japanese HAMBers here and I have several close friends that are Japanese. You can remember people without slandering a whole race/nation.

Having said all that..."thanks" to all of our vets for their service to this country.

I am very thankfull for what we have and there isnt a day I dont think about what others have done for the US. Its just sad to see it being taken away day by day and days like this bring it all to the forefront.

I see only one senior member posting on this that needs to be delt with.

ANY soldier who is prepared to put down his life in the name of his country deserves respecting and remembering, whatever his country was. Most all soldiers are just doing their duty, and are far removed from the politics that started their war.

I find it ignorant and obtuse for anybody to insult veterans, any veterans, on a post dedicated to veterans! If anybody doesn't like this thread, move on, as their pathetic attempt at attention-seeking is not wanted here.

For the last 3 years or so I've been e-mailing a guy in the marines with pics and info about hot rods and stuff while he was in Afghanistan, Okinawa, the tsunami relief and Iraq. Hid dad is one of the local guys into hot rods and a friend of mine. 2 weeks ago I get a call to get my ass over to Roger's place. Joe and his dad Paul were there. When he came home his dad asked him what he wanted to do most and he said work on a Hot Rod! They spent a couple days of his leave getting rusty, dirty and greasy working on my chassis and had a ball. About once an hour or so he thanked me again for sending him the hot rod stuff to keep him and his buddies going over there. He's back in Okinawa now looking for something he can work on. His japanese wife doesn't really understand the whole old car thing but she's backing him now. :D

Every time I see a license plate marked WWII Veteran I think about all who gave their lives for our freedom. And I forgive the soldier behind the wheel of that car if he drives too slow or pulls out in front of me. For without his service to our country, I might not have had the rights I have today.

A sad day in history, but like someone said it gave the US reason to properly join WW2 which they were pretty reluctant to do at the time, pretty much saved us and the aussies having to deal with the yellow peril here at home after fighting a losing battle all the way down the pacific.......
I personaly like the way the US appreciates its vets and wish we did more for ours here, and as stated above the Vets of any war the grunts taking the chances are not the same guys who put em there (funny thing is they seem to escape the danger) be it for the right or wrong reasons.
