Ok so I dont know much yet and am learning under the proverbial gun..
    Bottom line, car wont start..
Tried lightly tapping the starter solenoid located on the inside fenderwell, as well as wacking the starter a couple times...
The only noise that I am getting is like an electrical buzzing.. no sound of a starter trying to turn, or even of it spinning and not connecting...
    any advice?
    Thanks...

(Ok I know get a manual.. Im hoping I got one for christmas...)

Thanks.. Know if a starter shop can test the starter to see if thats what it is?
The weird thing is I went to NJ for thanksgiving and it was running ok, came back and it wouldnt start.. of course we did get a snow and the temp dropped...

  4. What kind of voltage do you have at the starter? When there isn't enough to turn the starter, they will make a kinda buzzing noise.....Put a voltmeter on the power stud on the starter, and see whatcha got. May be just a bad cable, or maybe the battery shit the bed......

umm not sure... Looks like I am going to have to borrow a voltmeter and check it...

this may be an even dumber question.. but if the prior owner had a 12 volt battery hooked up how long would oit take to drain out if it was running a 6 volt system.. and wouldnt a 12 volt wreck the hell out of the electrical system right off the bat?

heck I am pretty sure its a 6 volt system.... its a 61 fairlane.. and has a generator.....

61 is 12 volt.........they all went to 12 volt by the mid 50s, except some foreign makes.

shows how much i know... thanks for the knowledge there Poncho ;)
For some reason I thought "Generator=6 volt I have a gen light, theres a generator.. so this car must be a 6 volt..."
What is the major difference between a generator and an alternator? Is it worth it to make the switch? or is it best to leave well enough alone...
