Some of you may remember awhile back I posted a story about my friend who found out he has an in-operable brain tumor. Anyway, if you don't, he has this 34 Ford that was "being worked on" at this shop. The guy wasn't doing shit to the car so I decided to go start working on it myself. (No help from the shop owner of course) Well, I finally got sick of driving to this shop so Sunday we brought the car here. I'm trying to get it into shape for this guy since he's hanging on by a thread and the 34 is all he cares about. So, here's some pictures of the car as of right now. It's in need of alot of sheetmetal work as far as the under structure goes. The decklid had over 200 drilled holes in it where someone had tried pulling dents out. I filled those which took forever and flush mounted a Hagan filler door in the deck. The previous shop had put it above the wheelwell, just about level with the top of the tank. (Never get gas in it that way) I built a square tube structure under the floor to support the pan. I think tonight I'm going to start on the transmission tunnel. I still need to figure out what to do for pedals as the owner hadn't planned that out yet. It's a 4-speed to boot. After the main tunnel is finished I need to figure out what seat is going in it so I can plan for the driveshaft tunnel. I suppose buckets would be easiest as far as the tunnel but a bench will mount to the tube structure underneath alot easier. I'm pretty proficient at fabbing/welding but this is the first Rod I've gotten to work on so I'm kind of at a loss on what stuff to use/not to use. Any suggestions or comments are welcome. I just want to get this car together so my friend can check it out. Enjoy...
Sorry to hear about your friend but I hope you get the 3w done for him to see. Looks like a great car.
I can see being there . Thats the reason I'm selling parts to finish my dragster. You are a good friend. thank you.
Thoughts a prayers going to your friend and to you to get this thing done!!! Take care... Troy. P.S. Cars looking wicked...
Yep, I remember that post. Glad to see you've been able to take charge of the situation. He's a lucky guy to have a friend like you. Olson
lookin good, whats that tank look like with the deck lid open? dont recall ever seeing a filler in the actual lid
Well, the decklid is getting welded shut so the tube will just go straight into the tank. It's just a car tank out of some 70's chevy. I have no idea what it is. But anyway, the neck just goes straight down into it. Personally, I'd like to have a big knarly spinner type fill on it but it ain't my car so Hagan it is.
BTW, I really need some advice on this thing... I haven't a clue what type of pedal assembly to run for starters. I dug around in his shop yesterday and all I found was a new Lokar gas pedal. I have a clutch and brake pedal to contend with. The car is running 4 wheel drums and I don't think a booster is necessary at this point. I need to keep the parts on the cheap side because this is out of my pocket and I can't bring myself to ask them for money. Therefore any of the premade streetrod style kits are out of the question. Help me out guys. I've never done this before. I'll have a bunch of other questions I'm sure but as for now, I need to get the pedals together.
its really great what you are doing for your friend . judging by the pics its going good . the only thing i can suggest is you should probably put some bead rolls or alot of welds in the floor pan to keep it from making nois under your feet. looking at the rest of the project i would say you already know this
It'll be sandwiching rubber between the frame and the pan. I think once the tunnel is in place it will get pretty rigid as well. Thanks man...
now that's a true friend there....through thick and thin.... I hope your blessed from your doings. Keep us posted.
PM me your address,I might have an older style aftermarket type brake/clutch pedel set I'm not sure if it was for a racecar or hotrod but it might work and the price (free) is right, if I can just remember were I last saw the damn thing (might take me a few days) I'll ups it to you. And how is it there are so many shops out there screwing people and getting away with it?? Edsel
Where in Missouri are you? Maybe we could scrape together a trash from some of the local guys to help out. r
You are a class act. I would really really really hate to see you weld the deck lid closed. Did I mention I think that is a bad idea? I have a '39 pedal going into a 60s mustang master, under the floor in my '36.
I'm in the Northeast corner of Missouri to answer that question. (Out in the sticks.) I didn't want to weld the decklid shut either but that's the way he wants it. I told Edsel in the PM I sent, I hope this post didn't come off as me fishing for donated parts. As great as that would be, it was not my intention. However, as far as advice from here on, I need a fair amount of that. I looked in the tech archives and found something about Ansen style pedals. Is that something that would work also? Sounded like most of the parts were sorta "available"
i hope robin meant thrash, and if so i'll help if i can. 'course, i might have some trash available too...
From what I gather its when a mess of hot rodders get together and "thrash" away at said project to get it to the next stage of completion. Is that about right? Im an fng/newbie as well and am getting the gist of alot of these terms myslef.. Good luck, I had a freind that was inoperable.. Wish I coulda done sompthing like this for him. I'll say a prayer for him and you in your attempt to get that rod done...
I think you need to try & set a firm date for the guys in your area to come out and lend a hand. But, first outline your operation & have on hand what needs to be done so when the workers get there they can make every minute count. I wish you the best of luck! Gary 4T950 Chevy Guy
Swing pedals would be the easiest & you can make em from scratch. You might want to go back & check in Tech Archives, there may be something on that. This suggestion too is not my preference, but doable (remote resevoir & clutch slave cylinder) locate a one off of a firebird/camaro. I think that it is great for you to be this type of a friend. This car means alot to this guy. It looks like it is way along in the build stage. By all means, ya gotta talk him outta the welding up of the decklid. Man he'll ruin that body. If he still wants if filled, humor him by tacking it shut and do the "All Metal -t.m." fill. I have 2 3W's where people filled the roof. 1st one was a gas welded hack job with filler to give it a crown, 2nd is a tack welded galv sheet of steel that has some form of filler on it. Both cars retain their tack strip area so it would just be a grind out deal on both Coupes. Atleast they were thinking about the next owner. Now, you definitely have your work cut out 4 u so I hope that enough time to get it done. I wish that I was a ili closer cause this could turn into a "HAMB-Build for a Buddy deal" I'd give a couple nights a week. PLease tell you friend "Best wishes & to hang in there, " Sincerely, Kevin
Man, I'd be all about that thrash thing! Turns out I got a set of pedals coming from edsel, that's awesome! If any of you guys want to come up on a weekend or anytime for that matter, I'm all for it. Do you think I should start a new thread suggesting this idea and maybe organizing the legistics of it all? I don't want to sound arrogant or whatever by posting something along those lines so if that's a bad idea let me know. Thanks again for the support. Making me feel pretty welcome here. Grant
