Bob, I really like the stance on your Customline. My Fairlane sat about the same but the previous owner flipped the rear spring shackles to get the rake, like kids used to do back in the 60s. But for the resto I used air shocks (another custom touch).

QUESTION - what size tires/wheels do you have? They seem to be a perfect fit.

    Ron

I'm running 15" stock wheels painted to match the metallic blue with Baby Moons and trim rings. I too am running air shocks on the back (maybe that gives it a bit of a rake). Never could stand the "tail dragger" look. I like what your doing with the Fairlane so far, though I'll stick with the bench seat (let's the p***enger ride closer). Like you I'm also ex Air Force (ret). I was into electronics.

Monkey, that car has a great stance. I need to raise the tunnel in mine, and I really should while the interior is out. Infact...I may get into that tomorow. I'll post a profile shot in less than a month, and I'm really excited to.

  3. Great thread - love the pics and the info.
Maybe posted here and i missed it, but how low can you go in the back before a c-notch and/or raising the tunnel is necessary??
Also, whats the main advantage of springs over blocks? My car is getting closer to done and my checkbook is gettin' thin - I'm liking the cost of blocks vs springs, but I'm looking for input.

Leverage. In short, the taller the blocks the more the spring will deflect during acceleration and braking. This can have severe driveline and safety consequences. Dearched springs do not have this problem as leverage is not increased.

How low can you go before you run into problems?

Here's how I would deal with that question: Mock the car up at the ride height you want to achieve, using long U-bolts and lowering blocks made from wooden 2x4's. A quick eyeball at the clearances above the axle and between the driveshaft and the rear floor brace will tell the story. If there's any doubt, get three of your chubby buddies to sit in the back seat, then jump up and down on the rear bumper. If anything hits, get out the torch!

Keep in mind that the rear end travel limiters (snubbers) should (must) be positioned to keep the driveshaft from hitting the floor under any cir***stances.

    Hope this helps.

    :)

  5. Helps a ton - Thanks.

Only problem is, I don't have 3 chubby buddies! LOL

QUESTION - are you going to the Kalamazoo swapmeet this weekend? A bunch of guys from the Lansing area are heading down there. don't know yet if I'll make it.

Dropped spindles in front, Jamco lowering springs front & rear. Front was so low as to be undriveable, so I spaced it back up about 1".

Doing a search made me stumble across this dead thread. Seems like a good one to bring back to life. Especially helpful to those of us still trying to get our stance right on our cars.

Specs posted on how the stance was accomplished really help out.

This is how mine is sitting with 2" blocks and shorter springs in front. Also running stock 670-15's.
I need to lower it more. Maybe 3" blocks and spindles?

New replacement leaf springs in back (JC Whitney, USA made) with High Jacker air shocks, about 80 lbs. Front - Aerostar coils with 1" spacers (up, not down).

This is how my 55 is sitting right now. Granada conversion with one coil cut out, Jamco dropped leafs, although I did have to add a set of overload helper springs to dial in the exact ride I wanted. Gary

Here is the closest I have to a side profile picture. Just lowered the back a little more and got the caddy caps on it now too. Also installed some Diamond Back tires and got rid of the old bias-ply's.
