I have aquired a late 50's 2GC ( 58 Chevy ) to go on my 53 flathead. It's gonna need a quick going over as it's been dry for a few years. Is there a good source for kits and jets. My local NAPPA doesn't seemto be much help. This is an intrum fix to keep the truck on the road while I sort out my dual carb set-up. It's going on a stock 53 Merc engine. Any jetting suggestions ? I got four rebuild kits for Rochester 2gcs from NAPA a while back. They had to order them, but they had them for me the next day. If no one comes up with the part #, I can have it for you when I get home. I think they were under $40 for all 4 (my cost). Otherwise, try using a 65 Impala with a 283 as an application. Same carb, same kit. I just tried Advances website and they only list 4 barrels. Karl
i got mine from Auto-Zone,i looked'em up on their website(just punch in "'63 chevy 283 2 bbl" or something similar, all the 2G and 2GC kits are the same),then called the store and ordered them. GP Sorensen 96-111D
Like the guys said, the 2G was used from the 50s thru the 60s. Same kit for all of them. Rochester did make a bigger, similar carb towards the end of the era so watch out the kit isn't for one of those. The problem is the kids at the parts places can't look them up on their cell phones... Odds are they have one gathering dust on a back shelf. They just don't know how to find it. The trick is to find a parts guy that pre-dates the cell phone in the 8th grade era. Maybe if enough of us write in we can get them to put a parts list app on the X-Box 360. I'm pretty sure Sony would want royalties and copy protection on every part sold along with a non transfir, single use one machine only agreement tho.
Thanks for all the info...I guess I'll go back to NAPPA and find the graybeard and talk to him. I gave up on "Auto Zone" a long time ago. If I need smaller or larger jets can they be sourced at NAPPA as well? I don't have a clue as to what jets to use for a stock 53 Merc engine. Chuck Fish
The jets in the carb are sized for the airflow of that carb under all street conditions. You shouldn't need to change them for the street. If you want to balance your dual carbs, stop by.
Your 58 carb was sized to work on a 283 or 265. The Merc is a bit less than that but I doubt you'd have to re-jet it. Try it with the stock jets first. These 2G carbs are a bit smarter than the older carbs like the 97 or that wierd assed thing that came on your Merc.
There is no one making new jets for he 2G carbs. Quadrajet jets will fit but the calibration is different. I have found jets from 51 to 67 in various carbs.
Tommy, thanks for the info on the jets and the offer to sync the duals. I'm doing the 2GC as an intrum set up while I do a complete rebuild of the Strombergs. I am also going to get rid of the dual point Mallory and use one of Ron's SBC conversion distributors. Chuck Fish
Got my jets for the man-a-fre 2g"s from Southern California carburetors in El Cajon Ca. they got any size you need i got 49s and drilled em then ordered the right size once i new what i needed was 52"s there phone # is (619)590-2272 hope this helps. man-a-fre
Thanks again...Now with all this info I'm really dangerous. Ordered my rebuild kit and It will be in Monday. Now all I need is some co-operation from old man winter ( NO Garage ! ) and I'm in business. I don't mind the cold too much but the snow and rain sucks! What kind of fuel pressure do these carbs like? Chuck Fish
