I think I'm going to have to blast.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by phatboy, Dec 9, 2005.

  1. Anyone got any suggestions about how to get the undercoating off the underside of fenders. I need to weld up some holes and would just like for the fenders to look good insde and out. I've tried hammering, heat, putty knife, chemicals. Blasting is next on my list. I wish the paint was as good on the outside as it is under thids stuff. Thanks guys for the tips. Phatboy

DON'T sandblast them! Undercoating is not going to come off with a sandblaster, but it very well might warp the steel. I see that you tried heat, but you need to keep trying. I've used a Burns-o-Matic propane torch on undercoating with great success, usually just takes a little heat and it softens up, then you can get at it with a gasket scraper. Give the heat method another chance.

I have had good luck with Kleen Strip paint stripper in the gold can from Home Depot. It seems to be the fastest and stongest.

Eastwood sells a product specifically for removing undercoating.

  6. Thanks again. I thought if a little heat did a little good , alot of heat must do alot of good. I got outside the shop and got the rose bud and went to it. Works good. Gota move fast tho. Just warm it enough to be able to scrape with a large putty knife. Wear a mask.

when i build a race car I use dry ice to remove all the under coat , sound deadner, seam sealer. it makes it really hard and shrinks it where it will scrape right off with a putty knife.
