Bill of sale vs. title in Ohio

Has anyone here ever bought an old car and olny received a origional bill of sale with it and then taken it to the title people and received a title back. Do they inspect the car before giving you the title?

In the great state of Ohio they sometimes accept a bill of sales and they sometimes don't. It all depends on what state the bill of sale is from. For example: you buy a car and the bill of sale is from Georgia, you will need an inspection but they will accept the bill of sale. You buy a car from California you will still need an inspection but they probably won't accept the bill of sale as legit. You would either need to provide them with a title or previous registration. This is why it is always a good idea to become friends with the gals at the DMV! Bottom line is: if the bill of sale is from out of state or country you will need an inspection. The bill of sale will be accepted depending on the state it is from. They have a tendency to accept bills of sale from Georgia, Alabama and a lot of the New England states. Seems to me alot of it has to do with what county your are in. The county next to you may have a whole different attitude. If they do an inspection at the title office, you are in. If they want you to get a Highway Patrol inspection, run. Buy a title at a swap meet and save yourself a ton of red tape. Also, if it is a New York registration, they will not take it. Another tip, Ohio is wise to all the companies that sell titles (broadway) and will not take them either. What are you trying to title?

 

i live in washington state. i purchased my 61 lincoln in connecticut. in washington every car has a title. in connecticut i believe there is some sort of cut off where older cars dont have them. on the back of the registration there is a place to sign it off just like a title. i brought it back to washington, took it in to my local licensing place. they have a book they popped open that shows all the licensing rules of other states and verified connecticut doesnt use titles on the older cars. they transfered everything into my name. and the lincoln was issued a washington title. no inspections were required.

 

Anytime I brought a car into Ohio and it didn't have an Ohio title the car had to be inspected.
If the title is in your name from another state(on the front of title) they will just issue an Ohio title without inspection.

You can try and take the bill of sale and the car to the OSP and have them run the vin if it has one and take the paperwork & pictures to your local deputy registrar and try for a title.
As stated in and earlier reply , get friendly with the folks at your local registrar and don't volunteer any more info than needed.
Ohio is the biggest pain in the ass state to get a title in but it can be done.

 

Just for a bit more info...... Ohio changed the law awhile back. You can take a title to ANY DMV office in the state and get it transferred. So if your county's DMV has a rep for nitpicking, just go to another one.....

One more thing I just thought of...If you think you may have trouble passing an inspection at the Highway Patrol or DMV you can also have out of state cars inspected at accredited new car and used car dealerships. Accredited meaning that they are registered with the state to inspect out of state cars for title/registration. This is often a better route to go being that they are car people and know the ins and outs of cars and that things like windshields and vin tags are really just an option (if only we lived in a perfect world...)

 

This is for the '23 Dodge I picked up from Restorit. He lives in Iowa but when he sent me the paper work it had an old origional Ohio bill of sale from the '20's. Since I title all my stuff in Ohio that works good for me as long as I can turn it into a title.

I have a friend that works at a car dealer and does any out of state inspections that I need done but with this being a Ohio bil of sale I was not sure if they would still want an inspection or not. I just figure since I have an origional bill of sale with the correct #s on it I want a title with the correct #s as well.

 

State of Ohio the title is done by clerk of courts in your local county and every experience I've had is by the book which means You will have to get it inspected by the OSHP or better known as the speed Nazi's

 

I just titled 5 tractors we purchased in Fla. printed the out of state inspection for from the franklin Cty clerk of courts, had a local cop in Secacaus sign of on the serial #'s and odometer readings, got it notorized and the great State of Ohio accepted it Titled the trucks without ever bringing them to Ohio

 

You are going to play hell getting an ohio title with a bill of sale from ohio. This is from experience. PM m and I'll tell you how I did it.

 

well, what is the exciting conclusion to the story? Did you brave the DMV yet?

 

I am going to try enjenjo's way and see if it works. I am not in a big hurry to get it done at the moment.

 

I bought a 54 chevy truck from and with a NC bill of sale. No title.

I just took it to a buddy who owns a small carlot. He did a outta-state inspection(even though the truck wasn't there)and I took those papers to the DMV, and got a Ohio title!
No problem.

This was just 6 weeks ago.

 

I have an Ohio bill of sale fom the 1020's not a new one. I have a guy I have used before, I just need to find his card.

 

Ohio BMV will not accept an Ohio bill of sale. They issued titles since the teens, so they figure there should be one out there. Out of state bill of sales are honored, unless it's too old. Heck, they won't even accept a notarized Ohio title if the Notary's commision has run out. Ohio is about one of the toughest states to get a title in. They don't have bond titles either.
