Ok how many of you guys have hooked a 4 speed to a Y-block. What all is invlved in it? Do you have to use a adapter? Thanks Kennedy
If you have a stock three speed Y block bell housing, I have a T10 here that will bolt to it. that easy.
no adapter necessary, just use the correct T-10 and the appropriate clutch disc for the imput shaft. installed
My purple coupe is running a top loader 4 speed to a 56 Y-Block, bolted right up BUT had to have the input shaft extended about 5/8 of an inch. Place here in Wichita did it A and Reds transmissions. Used the mustang clutch ***embly bolted right up to the y-block fly wheel. Made my own clutch linkage all works good.
The T-10's with a dual bolt pattern will fit the Y block as well as post 65 wide pattern SBF and FE's. The wide pattern only cases will not work on the older engines. There are also several input shafts used, Im not sure which ****** ID code works without modifying. You can also use a SBC ****ter shield bell which has enough meat to redrill for a flathead or Y Block pattern. Then use a GM ******. Its just a matter of finding one these days.
I have a top loader behind a Y block in a 54 Ford. The T-10's will probably bolt right up as discussed. Don't have any experience with a T-10. The toploaders will bolt up with only a few mods. The input shaft is too long, usually about 3/8 of an inch. This can be cut off and causes no problems. There will be enough left to go into the pilot bushing/bearing. Measure first before cutting. The bearing retainer will be to big to fit in the bellhousing by just a sconch - put it in a lather and cut it down. Very little has to be cut. If you get a early Toploader (64) the retainer may be the same size. They are kind of rare. Regarding the trans itself, there were three different cases that I know of. The first (64, maybe early 65) had the same bolt pattern as the Y Block bell. The second has 4 holes on the top. The inside holes are the same as the Y Block. The bottom is the same as the Y Block. The third had only the wide pattern at the top. However, there is enough meat (so I am told) to drill the inside holes to match the Y BLOCK. There were many different tailshafts. The best one, as far as I am concerned, is the 64 Falcon(may have other applications). This has the shifter mount right next to the main case so it puts the shifter right up front to clear seats. It's just right in my 54. I believe this is being reproduced by David Kee. Although the Hurst shifter applications do not list a shifter for this particular trans (64 Falcon- most were T-10's) there is one available from David Kee. David Kee also has the Jeep shifter conversion which puts the shifter on the top of the trans. Great for a hot rod shifter. Probably mega bucks?
