Just weld them on and then add gussets that wrap around/over onto the backside, or make new bigger uppers that wrap.
A tight gap means you'll use less filler and have a cleaner weld. Less to grind and usually less heat to get the job done meaning less warpage....
get the plain ones and send to Brown's Plating in Peducah, you wont be disappointed. They will have em back to you in about a week.

You can use impala shocks on the front but I don't think your going to get the change in ride quality your seeking just by changing shocks....
